Pre-race routine:

Arrived with plenty of time. Thunder started booming so there was a chance it would be a du. Asked RD about where the first run would go and went and ran it - just a short loop - 1/4 mile or so to spread folks out but rocky so no bare feet. Figured out a plan in case it was a du - found socks in the car so I could do the frist run in mtb shoes. Of course with all this planning, the thunder stopped and we had a swim instead!
Event warmup:

Stretching while waiting for the thunder to cease/beach to open. How do you warmup for a swim when you can't get in the water? I did some dry swimimming type shoulder exercisees but in the end we were able to get in. Ran the short potential first run course. Got ready and was on the beach for 6:15pm when they had announced it would open. Quick 200m swim with some pick-ups - not the greatest warm-up.
Swim
  • 06m 50s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 33s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

Not much. This is worth trying again to see if it was just a fluke.
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

Ugh. Last race I did I managed to put helmet on/take suit off in a one-er and thought I could do it again here but it failed so I have helmet on and am still standing in the wetsuit. That was not good - lost maybe :20. I did Bodyglide the backs of my mtb shoes and that helped alot.
What would you do differently?:

Focus on one thing at once in T1. Suit off first should always be my priority.
Bike
  • 27m 41s
  • 5 miles
  • 10.84 mile/hr
Comments:

This is a hard course to go fast on. I still need to work on being out of the saddle. I would like to be in the 26:xx by the end of the summer.
What would you do differently?:

Try to float.
Transition 2
  • 00m 24s
Comments:

This might be my all-time best T2 road or off-road. Pretty much perfect.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 23m 49s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Baby steps! Legs were cooky after the bike but I just kept them turning over and eventually they settled in. Mile 1: 8:02, Mile 2 (including the digger): 7:57, mile 3: 7:26. There's definitely room for improvement here but I think it'll come naturally as the summer progresses.
What would you do differently?:

Not fall. Der. Just keep pushing so that I am nearer the finish each week before Cheryl passes me.
Post race
Warm down:

Dunk in the lake - cold but work wonders. Showered.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing. Very pleased with the race. I experimented with going out hard on the swim which put me a little more taxed going into everything else but hung on.

Event comments:

Delayed by thunder but responsibly handled. Still no wave starts on the swim. We need to push for this.

This is equal to my best swim time all last summer so pretty happy. I decided to line up at te front, far right, run like hell, swim like hell right down the rope line and then cut across L to the buoy. Worked really well and I avoided the pounding I had taken the previous week.

Went better than the week before but still need to give it some welly and not get complacent. Really need to be out of the saddle so that the back wheel floats over the roots. I did get my feet out of hte shoes and on top coming into T2 which was a first - thought I would get my feet out or fall flat on my face as the trail was bumpy right where I did it.

Funny, I knew that Cheryl C would likely catch me like she did last week but I vowed to make it later in the run and make her work more. Then as I'm running along I think, I haven't seen any other women, normally there are some ahead of me and then I start thinking maybe I am the lead offroad woman. Then I hear footsteps behind me, get distracted, catch my foot on a root and go flying! I jump right up and the "footsteps" person (a guy) kind of scoops me up as he's running to also help me up. Little adrenaline boost and I could tell that I had skinned my knees. Got back into my rhythm pretty well. Cheryl came past with a mile left? It was just after 48:xx in so I guess just before the 2nd mile ended. She is fast - she takes a minute out of me from where she passes me to the finish. One of these days I will stay with her just for the hell of it and see how long I hang on!
