Swim
Comments: In all honesty I didn't do well mentally on this swim for some reason. I don't know if I pushed too hard early on, or if I just wasn't mentally ready for the swim. Swimming turns out to be the event where I place the highest although it is really the last thing I learned how to do. Somehow I ended up finishing in 30 min, but the reality is that I need to chill out and get in a better groove at Steelhead. What would you do differently?: Be more mentally ready. Transition 1
Comments: 3:55 seems a little long, but not too bad considering the long run up the beach, huge T-area, and long way to bike out. I'll take it, but I can improve. Bike
Comments: I started out fantastic on the bike. Through the first third I was averaging a solid 21mph. It turns out that this was probably too fast of a pace, and the later half of the bike is a bit more hilly then the first part. Overall I'm pleased with the improvement. What would you do differently?: If I am to concentrate on the short stuff next year, this race will be one of my 'A' races and I will prep more on the hills. The hills and the turns are constant throughout this course, and I don't do enough of them. Transition 2
Comments: Pulling into the T area is one of my favorite parts of this race. The crowd lines the fences and it just has a buzz about it. What would you do differently?: Nothin Run
Comments: Outstanding run for me. Last year I ran a 1:01:43 so that tells you how much I've improved. Kept the pace fairly steady early on until I hit mile 3 or so. After that point I picked up the pace a bit and kept it until the finish. With about a mile ago I turned it up one more notch and finished the home stretch pretty much all out. What would you do differently?: Great improvement, let's keep it going. Post race
Warm down: Walked around the amazing food area that they have on site and grabbed some snacks. My sister and mom were waiting for me so I chatted it up with them for a few. What limited your ability to perform faster: In all honesty I improved 17+ minutes on an olympic course in one year. That's great improvement. I need to figure out if i'll focus on short stuff next year and really come up with a plan to get myself into the 2:30's. I've still got a ton of room to improve. Event comments: Outstanding race, completely first class. I recommend it to anyone who wants to do a big time olympic. Minneapolis is a great place. Last updated: 2008-06-27 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5. Stayed at my sister's house about 15 miles from the race site. Got up and had some coffee and PB and J, got the stuff in the car and was on the road. Right when you get off the highway you know that you are at the race site. Traffic pretty much stops at 5:30 in the morning and everyone has a bike on or in their car. It's kind of like the scene from Field of Dreams where all the cars start heading to the field. Cool scene.
Took me a while to get my body marked so I got done with transition and headed to the beach. Hung out with my mom and sister for a few, then ran over to get 200M of swimming in on the side of the lake.
Before I knew it I was in line ready for my wave to hit the water. It's go time!
