Pre-race routine:

Got to bed early, had a bagel and juice for breakfast at 0600. Had my pack all ready the night before. Rode the bikes from the hotel to the race site about a mile away.
Event warmup:

set up my transition area. Had picked up a stick in the gears of my mountain bike the day before, trashing the derailer, had only two gears to use on race day. Decided to ride my wife's bike. Adjusted the seat in a hurry, didn't get it up quite high enough. Swam for a few minutes prior to the race. Water was great.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 500 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

I was amazed to see so many swimmers slower than me. I am not a fast swimmer.
What would you do differently?:

Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

To worried about trying to get the sand off of my feet.
What would you do differently?:

Just throw my socks and shoes on and go
Bike

  • 6 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Had trashed my shifter the day before the race, rode my wifes mt bike. Didn't pay enough attention to getting the seat height correct, it was a little too low during the race, had my legs burning. 6 miles on a hard packed beach was harder than I thought it would be. I was suprised to see guys riding mt bikes with aero bars on them. Also suprised to see guys riding road bikes on the beach, but the sand was packed hard enough.
What would you do differently?:

Have seat adjusted right next time.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Soft sand through transition area made going slow.
Run
  • 00m
  • 3.1 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

Ran out of gas on the run, legs were not tired, just couldn't get my breathing right. Second part of the run got hot. The whole run was a struggle.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on my run times.
Post race
Warm down:

Swam in ocean

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Still struggling with my run. Total time was, I think, 1:36. Happy with swim and bike, run is still my hardest event.

Event comments:

This was a neat format, everything on the beach. The beach was hard packed and you could run pretty fast on it. This was an easy going fun race. The trophies were monkey heads carved from coconuts.

Don't know times, only total time was given. Seemed everyone was breast stroking, big pile-up around the first buoy. Said heck with this, swam way left out of the crowd and gained on a few.
