Overall Rank = 172/936
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 1/14
Pre-race routine:

I got up at 4:30 and slept well. Took my time getting ready since I was in the last wave. Ate a bowl of Kashi crunch and a banana, and got the family up. Will leave earlier in the future for this race because the traffic was horrible. In 05 when I did this race I do not remember the traffic being so bad going into the park. However, I was able to get my transition set up the way I like it, and did not cut corners. Next time I will show up earlier.
Event warmup:

Just a little swim before the start, and some streching.
Swim
  • 31m 31s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my sixth 1/2 IM and i had a PR on the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Swim a little harder after the halfway point, I felt I had a little more to give.
Transition 1
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

There were wet suit strippers were great. This was only my second race having my shoes clipped in when I got to transition. I did well, but had to be quick because there is a hill right out of transition so you can't get to much speed, you just need to get your feet in.
What would you do differently?:

More practice on mounting the bike with shoes already on the pedals.
Bike
  • 2h 48m 38s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.92 mile/hr
Comments:

I should have eaten more. I got away from my plan when I saw another clydesdale pass me on the bike. It did me good, in that it kept my pace up, but I did not want to take the time to eat my gels, and relied on the Gatorade. I would pay for it later.
What would you do differently?:

Eat more. Attach my gels to the frame instead of using the bento box.
Transition 2
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

Ran to far in the transition area, and had to stop to use a port-o-potty. While in transition I saw only one other bike in the clydesdale area, so I knew I had to catch someone.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure I know the fastest way to the exit out of transition.
Run
  • 1h 46m 33s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Run started out great and then each hill took a little more out of me. My stomach was also calling out for food. I was still under 8 min pace with three miles left, but I did not have any left to keep it under 8. I had already passed one clydesdale at mile 3, but I was not positive he was the only one, so I kept moving as fast as I could. With 50 yards to go I still mustered the energy to pick up my 4 year old son and carry him over the line. He weighs alot more than he did when I carried him across at the '05 race. Well come to find out that was the only clydesdale out there.
What would you do differently?:

Eat More!!!
Post race
Warm down:

I ate all I could. Time was short and had to get back to the hotel to check out. So I pushed my son up the hill in his jogger to the parking area and that was it.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not eating enough.

Event comments:

Everything was great, except the racers needed more food at the end. I was at the olympic distance race about a month earlier and they had more food. The awards were great, and there was plenty of food there, but I wish they would get to the clydesdale and athena awards first, we can't get slots for Kona or Clearwater so once those are given out no one even pays attention. I have already registered for next years race.

Course: Course is tough. Eight hills, and nothing easy about any of them. Two of the most difficult hills do not allow you to accellerate back down, because they have too many tight turns. With the road being wet you had to go even slower. So on the other down hills I left it wide open.
