Swim
Comments: The waves were going every 10 minutes so you could see the lead swimmers finishing from the previous wave. I was all set to take this swim easy and lined up about 3 rows back and 6 or 7 rows from the inside. The horn sounded and I started to swim, bumped elbows a couple times but as I accelerated a little bit I got up to the front and set my cruise control. I kept looking for a set of feet to go by but there weren't any. About 2 hundred yds into the race I sighted and saw a body ahead of me right on the buoy line. I made a b-line to his feet and stayed there. He rounded the buoy faster than I did but I caught up to him and didn't have to sight the rest of the way. I just settled in and enjoyed the ride. The next thing I knew I saw the water get shallower and my fingers were touching the sand. That was a great way to start a race. :) Of course I wasn't racing! What would you do differently?: Absolutely nothing, probably could have swam faster but didn't feel the need to. Transition 1
Comments: Not a great T1 but not too bad. I said hello to a few people on the fence as I was getting my wetsuit off. I put my shoes on rather than put them on while riding because there were a couple turns and a steep climb right out of T1. What would you do differently?: As I say in all my reports, PRACTICE TRANSITIONS!!! I never seem to find the time to do this, drives me nuts!! Bike
Comments: The hill right out of T1 seems to go on forever. The last time I did this race I wasted my legs going up this hill so this time, since I wasn't racing :), I was just going to get a comfortable cadence and spin up the darn thing. When I got part way up the hill I noticed that my computer wasn't reset and my Garmin wasn't turned on. That's how prepared I was for this race. It was nice with the waves going off every 10 minutes, it actually gave me a lot of people to pass. I was singing "What goes up, must come down" to some of the guys I was passing going up the hill. One guy looked over and asked if I was actually singing. :) When I got to the top I was amazed at how my legs felt. There were a bunch of slower riders that I was just flying by. At about the 6 mile mark I saw Marmadaddy and I had a special song to pass off to him. :) Unfortunately there was a few other riders around him so I couldn't slide in behind him and give him a complete verse so I just yelled out "LIKE A RHINESTONE COWBOY!!!" as I went by him. Being a musician I knew he would appreciate that one. :) My legs were feeling great when I hit the turn around so I pushed a little bit coming home with the tailwind. It really felt like flying! At one point I was pedaling at 120 RPM's in my 53-12 going 42 MPH!! What a blast!! Still passing people like they were standing still I was amazed at how many people ride in the middle of the road. I kept mentioning to ride to the right as I passed them out near the yellow lines but apparently I'm the a$$ for trying to state the obvious. Anyway, I reached the hill coming down into transition and took my feet out before the descent. I was surprised that 48 mph was the max speed coming down that hill, it felt much faster. Had a great dismount, passed 2 people before the timing mat heading into T2. What would you do differently?: Nothing since I "wasn't racing". Transition 2
Comments: T2 wasn't bad but still a lot of room for improvement. What would you do differently?: PRACTICE TRANSITIONS!!! Run
Comments: I went out for a long run yesterday and felt some "twinge" in my shin so I definitely was not going to push any limits here with 2 IM's coming up. My goal for this run was to hold a 7:00 pace and pose for the camera. I did both, I can't wait to see the pics! I chatted with a lot of people on this run. Encouraging some of the slower people that looked like they were going to give up and cheering the ones that were passing me. I got passed by one of my AG with about 1/2 mile to go. I started to keep up and thought about hanging on to his heels and sprinting in but he had a much bigger kick than I did. What a great time!! What would you do differently?: Nothing unless I was racing. Post race
Warm down: Just walked around, found Matt, ate some ice cream and bagels with peanut butter. Drank water and my protein drink. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not "RACING", having too much fun! Event comments: The Cayuga Lake Triathlon ROCKS!!! The view of the falls at the 1/2 way point on the run is breathtaking. Volunteers galore and Jane Miller and the race committee really go all out to put on a great show. I would highly recommend this race and any of the Finger Lakes triathlons! Last updated: 2008-07-14 12:00 AM

I really wasn't in the "race mode" I should have been for a "National Championship" race. I came to the race to have a lot of fun and spend the day with Matthew. I hadn't even cleaned my bike before coming to the race. I also decided not to even use my disc for this one. I got up around 4:15am and had a bowl of oatmeal, made some coffee and loaded up the car with my stuff. "Stuff" included bike, pump, clothes, change of clothes, fishing poles, tackle box, sandles, everything you need for a race. :) I woke up Matt around 4:45 and we were on the road at 5am to get to Ithaca around 6am.
None. I was chatting with Marmadaddy and a lot of the Ithaca Triathlon Club members before the race. Matthew found a couple of friends and I met their parents who were both doing the race, they came up from Connecticut and brought a babysitter with them. I threw my running shoes on to try and go for a warm-up run but Matt had his fishing line tangled and I had to fix that for him. I did manage to get about a 1/2 mile in, just enough to move the bowels. :) Whew! I got my wetsuit on and swam a couple laps around the swimming area and headed over to be corralled in to my wave.
