Pre-race routine:

From my blog -
I have been really quiet inside, thinking about what it means to me to be a wife, a mom (especially a mom of a boy), be in my 40s, weigh a little more than I'd like but not too much :-), doing triathlons for the joy of it, and being a member of such an amazing online community, heck, forget the online, this is an amazing group of friends anywhere.

These are all the things I shared with Lucy/Christine. I'm going to run in peace knowing what a great job she did at all of that stuff, and aspiring to be better at them myself.

Left the iPod at home.
Event warmup:

Ran the first .9mi of my 4 mile route as a warmup. Slow and hot

Warm down:

Import the garmin, type up the report, refill the water bottle, then take the dog for a walk. Sit and think a lot about how even a sucky run is a whole lot better than not being able to run at all.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

They say that the 'real feel' is 97 degrees. That is to say it is quite humid today! If you add that, starting at 10:45, and being overweight and out of shape I think that explains my slow pace.

Event comments:

I will have more here of my reflections, but right now am way too hot to sit still. OK, I had these great aspirations for this run, you know, today would be such a magnificent run, the spirit of Christine would be with me, blow cool breezes on me, and lighten my load and quicken my feet so that even I would hit that magic 30min 5K that she wanted to run (that is also my goal). I am so full of myself. That did not happen. Instead, I ran too late, it was hot and muggy, and I am heavy and out of shape. I slogged through the 5K and even had to walk some of it. It was a sucky run, but what I know is that doesn't mean that I am a sucky runner - instead I remembered that every step is a gift, even the slow steps, even the heavy ones. I smiled at every person I saw. I marveled at the ordinariness of my run, of the people mowing lawns, clearing the jungles, bringing in the trash cans, walking the dogs.

You know, just being alive, nothing spectacular, no whoopdedooo whiz bangy amazing revelations. Just a nice, get it done run, thinking about an incredible soul, and remembering to be glad that I am able. Peace...
