Swim
Comments: Yup, it's official: I'm an average swimmer. I swim faster than this in training. Could I have pushed harder, yup. But when I did this race 4 months ago in April (my very first tri ever!) my time was 9:05, and I swallowed lots of pool water, and hyperventilated between 250 and 350 meters. This time around I was smooth, consistent, breathed well and swallowed zero water. What would you do differently?: Now that I have a little confidence racing in a pool, I will push it a little more next time and shoot for a sub 8 performance. Transition 1
Comments: Aprils transition time: 1:15. Today was even better, and it was good enough for 7th best overall. What would you do differently?: Run even faster! Bike
Comments: Last Aprils time: 15:34, so I beat it by 4 seconds - which is really good cause honestly, I just wasn't feeling "it" on the bike today. I was grinding it out and got passed by three people. What would you do differently?: Of the three disciplines, I slack on my biking the most. I need to train lots more. I can pat myself on the back for 11th place overall, but then again this was a local tri, not a 70.3. I need A LOT mor time in the saddle. Transition 2
Comments: I've been blessed that from day one I have always been able to do a perfect flying dismount. Ran into transition, knowing that I had a legit chance of going sub 40, got to rack my bike and BAM ... there's a giant freaking mountain bike wedged into my spot! I got put my bike in and it won't go under the damn mountain bike handlebars. Grrr.... I have to run around the entire rack, slip my bike under, run back and transtion into my run gear. Buh bye sub 40 PR. Last Aprils T2 time: 50 seconds. What would you do differently?: Accept the fact that when you do local/sprint-type triathlon stuff like this is going to happen. It just kills me cause 20 seconds in a mini-sprint is like losing 2 minutes in an Olympic triathlon. Run
Comments: Not a particularly good run. Four months ago I ran it in 14:18. The difference is there is no humidity in April. I can run a 6:55 pace for a 5k and almost a Half Marathon, but after swiming a measley 400m and biking 6 miles I can't go at least 7 even. I have no excuse. I slacked on the run. What would you do differently?: Push the run like I do a 5k, 10k or even 1/2 mary. I could've easily made up for the bonehead mountain bike dudes mistake by throwing some strides into my run. At the end I had way too much in my kick, I simply did not leave enough out on the course. Post race
Warm down: Ate a banana, drank some Heed, and left. What limited your ability to perform faster: Me and my blase attitude really. This was by far the smallest tri I have done, regarding the amount of participants. My family was not there, and for the first time I did not have one single friend at this race. It made for a very lonely race day. Event comments: EventPowerLI.com runs a good beginner sprint event. However I plan on suggesting they offer more racks than a regular Olympic event because a lot of beginners and first-timers use mountain bikes which tend to take up A LOT more room than road and tri bikes. In my rack alone there were three or four mountain bikes and the bikes were literally wedged in together. I am much more looking forward to the organizations Hamptons Olympic and Montauk Half Ironman event. Last updated: 2008-07-16 12:00 AM

Got up at 4:45 (yes I can get up early for races with no problem - it's dragging my butt out of bed to train that's the problem). Drank coffee and ate some waffles. No need to drag the wife kids out to a mini Sprint.
Test rode the bike a bit; little job; wonder why the athlete field is half the size it was back in April.
