Swim
Comments: Kind of a weird start as you run a couple hundred yards from the transition area down to the beach -- added about 1:30 to overall time. Overall this was one of my better OWS to date. The water was still cold, but warm enough that I decided to wear just the bibjohn portion of my Desoto T1. This made a huge difference as I had much better arm flexibility, while staying warm and buoyant. Good pacing and actually grabbed a few feet for a while, but (because of start) it was frustrating running into folks flailing about as they tried to breaststroke or backstroke in the middle of the course. It was a little tough sighting heading straight into the sun, but I did find a few targets that worked for me. Actual time in water was ~15:30, so it was nice to finally get < 2:00/100. What would you do differently?: Not much; at least for this race, I would position myself closer to the front of the run start to get ahead of some of the slower swimmers. Transition 1
Comments: Still a little slow, but I'm getting better with practice. Bike
Comments: This is a somewhat challenging course which is out/back with a lot of rolling hills. I've trained here a few times, so I knew what to expect and was somewhat surprised with my split time. That's when I realized what was up; when I made the turnaround, I got smacked in the face by the wind that was obviously helping on the way out. The wind, rollers, and overall uphill on the way back in made the second half a little tougher than expected. What would you do differently?: NO much. While challenging, I feel I had a good balance between pushing and spinning. Transition 2
Comments: Temporarily got lost finding my rack spot, and took a little time to get in some extra hydration. Outside of that, pretty much the usual. Run
Comments: It was pretty warm and sunny (no shade) and my HR was a bit high coming out of T2. I ran on the side of the path on the dirt area as much as possible as that was softer than the concrete. This was a bit slower than most of my runs, which I attribute to the challenging bike and heat. I actually hit the aid stations for water, which I usually don't even bother with. What would you do differently?: Training has been a bit sparse recently due to traveling, which I need to keep up on. Post race
Warm down: Walked around for a bit grabbing some food (Noodles & Company) and drinks (Coors). What limited your ability to perform faster: Somewhat limited training recently due to traveling and dealing with the heat. Event comments: This is a fun race as you can do the events in any order (makes for some really creative Duathlons like SRS, etc that would also be great for a training day). The start/transition/finish is a bit different with just IN, OUT, and FINISH but it keeps things level. The Aurora Rez is an awesome place to swim being so calm and clean, Quincy is a challenging but fair place to bike, and the trail (while open) is reasonable to run on. Good small race for the more recreational triathlete/duathlete as well as the competitive type. Got a free pair of Crocs as part of our registration, so that isn't too bad, either.
