Swim
Comments: Overall a pretty good swim for me. My shoulders felt fatigued. I had done a long workout 2 days prior after a week off. Hadn't fully recovered yet. It was a very congested swim, especially on the way out and the way in. Across was a little better. On the way out, it was totally packed, people hitting my feet, my hands hitting feet, hands hitting me in the head. I ended up stopping a couple of times to try to find a lane, which messed everyone else up. On the way in this one guy must have wacked me in the head 10 times, i couldn't get away from him !! What would you do differently?: I'm not sure what could have been done, the start of the race was really congested. Could probably have found a little more room on the second part across the back of the area, which might have helped on the swim into shore, with less traffic. Transition 1
Comments: T1 & T2 were my biggest opportunity for improvement, and i think i improved a lot !! The transitions aren't timed seperately in this race, but i'd have to say it was at least a 300% improvement, probably more. Got to Transition Area, wiped my feet, had my socks rolled to get them on easy. Got one sock, then the shoe on. Tied quickly. Other Sock, Other Shoe on and tied. Then did helmet and gloves. Just grabbed a drink at the aid station and i was off. What would you do differently?: Just try to do the same thing, maybe a little more quickly. Bike
Comments: The bike leg felt very difficult. I think i was pretty tired after the swim. I know 8 minutes, you wouldn't think. The first mile is pretty much all up hill so there's not any time to catch your breath. Seemed crowded, always someone on my tail going up hills and around corners, so spent a lot of time trying to stay out of other peoples way. What would you do differently?: Not be so tired? I have to go faster on the bike. Still not comfortable with my shoes and pedals. I also need new tires for this race. I said the same thing last time. I guess that won't change until i get my butt in gear and do it !! Transition 2
Comments: T2 - again, not separte time. But this was good. shoes/helmet off. Again, concentrated on one shoe at a time. Bike shoe off, running shoe on. Other foot. Took a few secs to drink half a bottle of vitamin water - because it's impossible to drink on the MTB course w/o stopping, which i didn't do. Boogied on out to the trail run !! Grabbed some water to thro in my face on the way. What would you do differently?: Again - same thing, just do it faster. Run
Comments: My Calves immediately started cramping, had to walk a bit. There's a steep hill about 200-300 yards into the run. i decided to walk until i got to the top of the hill, then start running. This worked out well, but i had a very slow pace, mostly up hill, for the 1st mile. Started feeling better after another half mile, then picked it up a bit. Last 1/2 mile i picked it up more, passed about 5 or 6 people and finished strong. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Maybe need to do more hydrating for a few days before. I drank a lot of water the day of, but was just okay in the days before. Need to run faster. Not terribly disappointed with my overall time - but not too happy with my overall place in the run or the bike. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed the rest of my vitamin water. Went to the finish to cheer on the person i chatted with before the race. I'm hoping to get to know some more racers, seems like a lot of people are there almost every week. Packed up, walked my stuff back to the car. Walked back to the dressing room to rinse off and change for the ride home. Walked back to the car, headed out - a little envious of some people hanging out having a beer after :( i'm bringing some next time and finding some one to drink one with :) What limited your ability to perform faster: The bike needs some upgrades to handle the muddy trails. I was nervous on the pedals. Either clipped or on the slippery unclipped sides, and the tires definitely need to be more knobby. On top of that, i seemed a little fatigued. Maybe more rest, maybe over training on the weekend and undertraining during the week. Event comments: I love that this is an every week event. I wish there was one closer so that i could easily make it every week. That being said, the registration process is so quick and easy, it's not out of the question to make at least every other week. Drove home - packed up my stuff, amazingly quickly. Ate a banana with Peanut Butter, Drank some water, Drank a couple more along the way. Had to pee really bad by the time i got off the highway. Traffic for the last 3 miles is ridiculous.
Walked down to the beach to find the start area. realized i had my drivers license in my shirt pocket. Walked back to the transition area to put license in bag. Walked back to start area. swam out to first bouy and back. Saw someone i met at last race. chatted :) got into my group to get ready to race !!
