Big Creek Tri 28
67F / 19C
Overcast
Total Time = 3h 13m 44s
Overall Rank = 277/300
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 15/16
Pre-race routine:

up at 5 am. big glass of water, PB and banana on a plain bagel. Lots of trips to the toilet.
Event warmup:

Standing around chatting with friends. about 2 minutes on my bike to make sure I was in a good gear. Right before the swim I did some arm rotations and flapping:)
Swim
  • 34m 45s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

My actual finish time for the swim was 32:35. The timing mat was all the way up by transition. I was cheated! This swim was my best ever. About the last 250 my goggles started to leak on the left eye. I had to make a couple of adjustments for that, so I might have shaved another minute off without that issue. After I got out of the water I realized that one of my straps had started flopping.
What would you do differently?:

Put goggle straps under swim cap. Other than that, nothing. This was a great swim for me.
Transition 1
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

wetsuit got stuck on the timing chip.
What would you do differently?:

Not get the suit stuck on the chip. Consider removing chip, then removing suit and replacing chip.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 40s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.26 mile/hr
Comments:

This course seemed to have more hills than last year. The road was smooth in places and in others rough or lots of road seams. I saw a lot of ejected water bottles.
What would you do differently?:

Know the course. I had ridden the old one so many times. This new course incorporated part of the old course, but it was hard not knowing exactly what to expect in terms of hills and wind.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

No real issues.
Run
  • 1h 15m 24s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

I always suck with the run. It was getting a little warm and I was thirsty. I did stop twice to use the toilet.
What would you do differently?:

I am hiring a running coach. Maybe I can drop this down to 60 minutes by next year.
Post race
Warm down:

drank some ice cold water provided by the race. ate Pringles Dill Pickle Chips on the way home. Brief stretching and a nice cool shower.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being a poor runner.

Event comments:

This was my 4th anniversary for this event. It is really cool to see how I have improved over the years.
