Swim
Comments: I started on the inside right sort of at the front of the pack. Was looking for the straitest line out along the buoys. I was surrounded by wetsuit wearing women who were probably among the more competitive or experienced participants. The gun or whistle or whatever it was went off and they proceeded to pummel me for the first 200 yards. Once I finally got some space I fell into a pretty good rhythm and felt like I was moving along pretty good. However, pretty quickly caught up with the previous two waves and had to fight my way through a lot of frog legging. Was tight to the turn around buoy and had some trouble getting around it with the crowd. The swim back in was pretty good. Felt like I was cruising. Couldn't do much drafting as I was mostly passing pink and green caps at the point. Got a little too far to the right and wasted some time trying to get closer to where the timing actually was on the beach. Stood up too soon and wasted time and energy trying to run through water that was too deep yet. Should have kept swimming to shallower water. What would you do differently?: Site the finish better. Keep swimming til I hit the beach. Transition 1
Comments: Wish I could have been faster here. Not sure why I wasn't. Had a hard time catching my breath. A feeling that would stay with me for the duration. Might have been the humidity. Might be a touch of whatever my husband came down with. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Just hurry up dammit! Bike
Comments: Ummm, I had a goal for the bike and it was to average 19 mph. So, I'm pretty happy with this outcome. This is where I put myself back in the race. It was raining the whole time and I had trouble seeing through my prescription sunglasses. I said "on your left" for the entire 12 miles. I got passed by only one rider. She was never more than 50 yards ahead of me from that point on tho and I followed right into transition. I'm sure she blew by me on the run. What would you do differently?: Maybe not go so hard when I'm feeling like I can't breath. I kinda had this feeling all through the bike. But, it wasn't a "you're working too hard" thing, it was more of "the air is too thick" kind of thing... Transition 2
Comments: Should have been faster. Had trouble getting my Zip Wheel into the shitty racks they had. What would you do differently?: Again, just hurry up! Run
Comments: This run was pretty disappointing. I felt like I was sucking it right from the getgo. Again, just feeling short of breath and like I couldn't get enough air. I tried to manage my pace to get past this feeling but just couldn't shake it. The little hills were killing me. My legs felt strong, but my lungs were not happy. I tried to just keep turning my legs over. Really couldn't wait for it to be done. This is where I lost my chance to place. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Maybe went to hard on the bike, but I suspect its just residual fatigue from having done IMLP not that long ago. I've run a few sub 8 minute miles in the last couple weeks so expected really to be able to run this faster. But the trail was pretty treacherous and the hills just sucked the zip out of me on this day. Post race
Warm down: Tried not to puke. Got some water, a medal, a few hugs. Felt just fine once it was done. What limited your ability to perform faster: I would guess that my body is not fully recovered from IM yet. Not enough to handle the short fast trauma. Event comments: HMF usually puts on a good race. Always fun to do an all women's event focused on beginners of all ages. Lots of good vibe. The field was twice as big this year! Woke at 5 a.m. ish to the sound of falling rain. In fact, had been hearing the rain falling all night. I love this sound and would have been happy to keep sleeping through it this morning... Got up reluctantly and went about making coffee and oatmeal. Felt a little too tired and not quite right. A few minutes later my other half came down stairs looking like he'd been run over by a bus. He didn't feel well and was soon back up stairs hurling. Okay, so I'm flying solo today, no biggie. Easier even. Ate my oatmeal somewhat reluctantly as my stomach was not really welcoming it. Had a bit of coffee, got dressed, threw my bike and gear in the car and headed out to Farmington. In the rain.
Hooked up with all the usual suspects while setting up transition. In the rain. Helped a few newbie women get their bikes situated in the racks and whatnot. Made the decision NOT to bother with the wetsuit. In the rain. Headed down to the lake with some friends to await the start. Did a couple short out and backs to get a feel for the water. Felt good.
