Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 and had my toast with peanut butter and jelly. Drank Coke Zero to get going. Warmed up my Starbucks I bought the night before and I drove for 45 mins to race. Drank coffee, ate banana on the way to race.

Got there in plenty of time to get transition all ready to go and hung out for a while before warmup.
Event warmup:

Put the iPod on and started listening to race music. Stretched and went for a short run to get the heart rate going. Came back to transition, grabbed my swim stuff and got in the water. Did the usual routine. Went for a couple hundred yards and came back to shore for a little break. Went back out again for another couple hundred and I was ready to go.

Lots of time now to hang out and wait for start.

Comments:

Started out on the very inside and on the front. Got a good start and it was me and and about 12 other guys that started out front. Felt really good and then about 40 yards before first turn some guy started coming right at me from the right side. He clearly wasn't sighting and I figured I could either stop and let him go or just swim over him. Guess which I decided to do? I just swam over his waist and then he poked his head up and realized he was swimming across and in front of the pack. It slowed me down a little but not a lot.

Got to the last turn and I decided to go right inside the buoy and pulled ahead of one other guy in my age group. I could've hung back and drafted but I figured it was a sprint so I'd go harder. We hit a couple times and then he pulled back. He drafted me the rest of the way in because he hit my feet at least a dozen times. I don't mind someone drafting since it's not very often someone drafts off me but if you're going to draft please don't keep hitting my feet. Next time I may slow down and kick you in the head. Oops, sorry. Some of my old college hockey days coming out again. :-) I really wouldn't do that on purpose.
What would you do differently?:

Not much else I could do on this short of a swim. Maybe go harder the entire way.
Transition 1
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Long run from swim to T1. Put glasses, helmet, and shoes on and I was gone. No socks.

10th fastest transition in age group so not very good.
What would you do differently?:

At some point I need to practice T1 with shoes clipped to bike as it will probably make a big difference in sprints and Oly's but won't be that huge of a deal in HIM and IM.
Bike

Comments:

I felt really good on the bike but mechanical (it was probably me) issues may have cost me 1st place in my AG. I was in the big ring until around mile 7 going up a hill when I contemplated going into the small ring to spin a little more going up a hill. After some thought I decided to shift. Sure enough my chain comes off. Everybody I just passed went blowing by me as I stopped to put my chain back on. Then again at mile 10 I thought I'd go back into the small ring. Stupid me, can't I learn from the first time. Chain comes off again and people blow by as I stop to put my chain on. I figured this may have cost me at least 45 seconds which would've put me within site of the lead guy in my age group. I ran faster than him and think I could've caught him if I had him in my site.

Outside of the chain issues I'm happy with the ride as I'm sure my average speed would've been much better without the chain coming off twice.
What would you do differently?:

Stay out of the small ring from now on!
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Pulled my feet out of my shoes on the last downhill and blew by a guy who just unclipped at the dismount line. Glad he pulled over a little or I would've run right over him.

Took off helmet and sunglasses. Put on shoes with no socks again for the sprint. Grabbed number belt and hat and was gone.

What would you do differently?:

Fastest tranisition in my AG and 9th overall so not much else I could've done.
Run
  • 20m 21s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I still don't have the top end speed I had last year. Since coming back from injury I've been more focused on staying in a zone to ensure I'll be strong for my IM run. I'm sure the speed will come back to me but it wasn't that bad of a run as I am still seeing some speed improvement since coming back from injury.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, speed will come back but for now I'll focus on the longer runs. Longer runs will eventually improve the speed as well.
Post race
Warm down:

Got the cold towel. Grabbed water and coke. Ate some snacks and then hung out eating burgers and just chatting.

Event comments:

Jack and Adams is the greatest! Jack was nice enough to let me help with packet pickup and let me pass out some samples for my sponsor. I love their races and appreciate all the work they put into them. If you're in Austin, J&A is the place to go!

BIG THANKS TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS!
