Event warmup:

I was a little late and nervous. Did jumping jacks, some stretches and did a 50 meter swim warm up (WAY TO EARLY>>>)
Swim
  • 18m 53s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was awesome!! Compared to the first race where I could barely do 100m of front crawl I was able to front crawl the entire race. It wasn't too fast but it was a great swim that left me feeling like I had more gas in the tank when I ran out of the water. No matter how I did today...this was the highlight!!
What would you do differently?:

I would maybe push a little harder once I've trained in the water more. Overall I planned on going out slow and keeping a consistent pace, which I did.
Transition 1
  • 04m 30s
Comments:

This transition was brutal. I didn't dry my shoulders off enough and my shirt stuck to me all over the place. I ended up just pulling it on with a ton of force and ended up ripping off my number. Which I now understand what the clip/thing is for!! It's not a key lanyard but a number belt. Who knew. It took at least a minute or two to pin the ripped number back on my jersey because of my cold fingers...what a show.
What would you do differently?:

I would wear a different jersey or focus on drying off better. I would also use the number belt to avoid tearing the number off again. Pretty crazy.
Bike
  • 46m 9s
  • 18.8 kms
  • 24.44 km/hr
Comments:

The ride was a ton of fun. It was really cool being a part of a race where there were some first class athletes competiting...when they blew the doors off me I could only admire their speed and power on the hills. It was something definitely to aspire to. I passed a bunch of people which felt good too but I didn't have my bike computer (borrowed bike) so I had a tough time judging how fast to go and not to go. all in all, the bike course was amazing and I look forward to doing it again.
What would you do differently?:

I would use my own bike and judge my cadence and hill climbing a little better. I would also would've liked to have drank a little more water during the race.
Transition 2
  • 04m 45s
Comments:

This was the worst transition of the day...I came off the ride feeling pretty good about things but when I racked my bike and went to switch my shoes my right calf cramped up like nothing I have had before. It lasted a long long time and I couldn't get it to stretch out. The moment I pointed my toes into my running shoes my calf seized up and it cramped long enough to have me fall over on my side. After about a minute the cramping stopped and I had to slowly untie and tie up my shoes to get out for the run. It was PAINFUL!! Really painful.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate, practice more brick sessions from bike to run and work on my pre-race hydration more. Otherwise it was a really smooth transition...right.
Run
  • 28m 52s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 46s  min/km
Comments:

I really had some gas left over for the run. I wasn't hurting in my breathing or lacking in energy anywhere as poorly as my first race but the pain from the cramping was brutal. I could barely stride out with my right leg so ended up short stepping onto my left leg to prevent going to slow. The trouble with this technique was I had a bruised meniscus from being hit by a car five days earlier. So to favour the right leg onto the left leg caused the left leg to hurt. Pretty fun little scenario. I honestly thought I might not finish the race during the first 1km of the run. Things seemed to let off a little on the pain side of things so I was able to push through. I passed some people and I was passed by people but outside of the knee and calf pain I really enjoyed this run. It made me feel like I had gotten my pre-race food right from the day before.
What would you do differently?:

Apparently I need to slow dowm my bike efforts or practice my bricks a little more. It will help in getting me to a place where i wont' cramp up. i am looking into taking some supplements as well to prevent the cramping.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate everything in site and drank everything in site. I consumed some serious good eats and drink. The post race food was great. Way way better than the gatorade and jelly beans at the last race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need more work on my pre-race nutrition and hydration. I also need to practice more bricks and get my bike back so it's not a foreign piece of equipment that feels wierd and messed with my head.

Event comments:

This race was so much fun. I really really enjoyed myself and thought it was a great introduction to the sport. The racers were super great and encouraging, the crowd was super supportive and the event was completely top notch. It was also really cool being part of a race that had world class athletes competing. The guy that was first out of the water for the first wave of olympic racers finished his 1500 faster than I did my 750!! That was really cool, not that I was so slow but that he was a speed machine. That also goes for all the speed demons on the bikes. Really really cool to see all that raw power in action.

It was a five star event and I'm looking forward to doing the olympic next year and hopefully (fingers crossed) I won't have to deal with the issue of being hit by a car!! Great great event.

Course: What an amazing and fun course. It was a closed course to traffic and the scenery was unbelievable. I really enjoyed this ride although it was on a borrowed bike which felt really really strange underneath me. It was a specialized Roubaix which is supposed to be light and fast but felt like a major slug...Not sure if it was the bike or just my mental attitude for the race...the course weaved along the sea wall and went up a hill on the lions gate bridge side of the park. It was a nice longer hill that went into a bit of a steeper grade for the last 200m of the climb. Pretty cool since on the other side heading towards the finish line you ripped downhill the rest of the way. Pretty awesome.
