Swim
Comments: The water route was marked very well. However, the ending didn't seem marked at all. I had a hard time navigating where exactly I was supposed to be getting out of the water. I decided to follow other swimmers and hope they were going the right way. What would you do differently?: Make sure I run over the chip timing path. My out of water/into transition time wasn't calculated for some reason. I thought I stepped on the timer but who really knows. Also, I think I'm going to start my swims in the front of the bunch. I know I could've gone faster but I'm afraid to swim over people and in waves with 100 people in them, going around is not really an option sometimes. I'd rather be gone over than have to go over someone else. It'll make my swim a much smoother race. Transition 1
Comments: It was a long run into the transition area. But I kind of like it because that run serves as somewhat of a cool-down for me. By the time I get to my bike I'm ready to ride. What would you do differently?: Practice getting the wetsuit off. Today was my first day in a suit and although it wasn't too difficult to get off, I know I could've gotten out of T1 a bit faster. Also, I struggle in T1 because I wear socks and a shirt. I'm just not ready to go without either. Bike
Comments: It was soooo wet! It definately slowed me down. I've never biked in the rain and was a little apprehensive about some of the turns. The slick road just made it feel like every turn was tight. What would you do differently?: Don't be afraid of practicing in the rain. And do more speedwork! Transition 2
Comments: Quick and easy! What would you do differently?: Nothing. I think T2 is the best part of my race! Run
Comments: I felt like I should've come in faster. The first .5-.75 miles were definately what slowed me down. I love trail running though and actually like running in the rain, so it kind of picked me up a bit. What would you do differently?: Not slow down in the beginning of the run. I seem to be zipping through T2 just to take it easy during the first bit of the run. I don't know why I feel like I should be relaxing then... I want to get faster! Post race
Warm down: Running to my family and friends and hugging them all. Walking to the car and changing. Eating. I need to practice warming up and down. What limited your ability to perform faster: The rain. Other swimmers/my positioning in the water. My lack of speed training. Event comments: One of the race volunteers was actually pretty rude/loud/obnoxious in the transition area. At the end of the pre-race meeting he yelled at the racers and supporters to listen to the speaker. He was constantly yelling at racers to go in the right direction in the trans areas and yelled at racers and supporters to keep their distance when near the trans area. It's one thing to talk loudly so everyone hears you, but he sounded like a pissed off father yelling at a teenager. It was not necessary and very much unappreciated. I really liked the water station that went into the trans area, but I hated having only one during the run. I guess that was the balance they had to make. Overall organization was ok and the routes were great, but I felt like there were some marking issues. I couldn't find the end of the swim on the shoreline and couldn't tell where the finish to the race was! And I know I wasn't the only one because the woman who finished first was actually directed incorrectly to the finish as well. I'd still do the race, but hopefully show up a little earlier so I don't piss off any volunteers while talking to my folks about helping me get my wetsuit on...no racer wants to be yelled at! Up early. Ate a small whole-wheat bagel with organic chunky peanut butter. Made some coffee to go. Struggled to get the bf out of bed.
Running from trans to my parents to trans to my parents trying to get my stuff together in less than a half hour. Not much of a warm-up, but my heart rate was sure up.
