Swim
Comments: Not a terrible swim for me since I haven't been in the water since July 8th . Rumor has it that it was probably closer to 800 yards. Started at the back of the pack. Navigated much better than last year. Did have some problems with goggles sealing. Didn't feel too bad on the swim. What would you do differently?: More swim practice. Transition 1
Comments: Average transistion. Tried to be smooth and efficient. What would you do differently?: Practice transistions more. Bike
Comments: This is where I really tried to make up some time. I feel that of the three disciplines, this is my best. Once again still lacking in training. Passed quite a few people on the bike. Tried to keep my candance at 90 and do smooth shifts and corners. Stopped for a downed biker to offer my help, but it wasn't needed. Felt happy on the bike. My bike computer showed 19.92 miles with an average of 18.9 mph. What would you do differently?: More training. Transition 2
Comments: Fast transition since I am still using cages. Run
Comments: This is where the wheels really fell off. Since I had pushed hard on the bike and lack of training, my legs were fried for the run. Made my way out of transition and onto the cours. Passed the family right out of transition. I would call my run more of a shuffle than a run. Within the first mile I had to take a 30 second walk to get my legs back under me. Fell into a decent shuffle until the first aid staion. Walked the aid station to hydrate. Continued with my shuffle and then it happened. Between the first and second aid station I stepped into a huge pothole. I don't know how I missed it. I turned my ankle and fell into a gravel driveway. My ankle hurt instantly. After getting up and brushing myself off, including my pride, I walked for half a block to see if I could even finish. I decided to finish and started my shuffle again. Walked the next aid station. After that I started to do a run/walk routine. I ran until I felt like I couldn't and then walked for a while. After the last aid station I was mentally beat. I was hot, tired, sore and could only run for short distances. Then the fast finishers started to pass me with their bikes in the back of their trucks on the way home. I almost just sat down and waited for a ride home. Decided to finish and run/walked to the finish. Ran across the finish line with my kids. What would you do differently?: More training and not step in pothole. Post race
Warm down: Walked over to sports medicine to get an ice pack for my ankle. Apologized to my cheering section for my poor performance. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training, training and more training. I'm not even going to use my ankle as an excuse. It was the lack of training that did me in. Event comments: More drink stations this year on the run. Would have liked to have mile markers on the run. Last updated: 2008-08-19 12:00 AM
