Pre-race routine:

From Thursday onwards, the excitement of Aviva 70.3 starts with the race pack collection at the Millenia Walk. On Friday, there was a race briefing at the Playground (former Big Splash) followed with Carbo Loading dinner. This is also the first time that all the participants gathered together. It is quite interesting to see the faces of fellow triathletes.

The bike checked in was on Saturday between 9am to 3pm. Steven and I went just before noon. The bike has to endure heavy downpour that night. On Sunday morning, we got up at 4am to eat porridge. That was my energy for the race. Luckily the rain stopped despite a light drizzle in the morning. At 5:30am, we got into a cab to the race site.

There was already a long queue for the body marking when we reached there. After the body marking, we proceed to the transition area to set up our stuff and pump the bicycle tires. We have to let go of the air when we checked in the bike to prevent it from bursting due to the heat of the afternoon sun. Once everything is in order, we waited for the first wave to start at 7am. My wave were supposed to start at 7:35pm but it was slightly delayed for a couple of minutes. Steven's wave started 10 minutes before mine.
Event warmup:

Did some dynamic stretching and a few short laps of swimming.
Swim
  • 59m 27s
  • 1900 meters
  • 03m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

When the horn was blown, everyone dash towards the water. Generally the swim was ok except for the pushing and punching. My goggles were pushed out of position once and I was pushed around many times. It was quite annoying. At times, I would push back to show my aggression. I called it survival in the water.

When I finished the first lap, I saw my Polar HRM showing 27mins. At the back of my mind, I was thinking, 'Wah so slow huh!'. For the 2nd leg, I tried to stay focused and continue swimming. I finished the swim in 59mins.
Transition 1
  • 05m 15s
Comments:

After changing into my bike gear, I pushed the bike out but was told by the volunteers that I need to make a big round. Instead of doing a big round (cause I came from the far end of the transition and I do not want to go back to where I come from to go out), I decided to go through the bike stand to get out of the transition.
Bike
  • 3h 42m 38s
  • 90.1 kms
  • 24.28 km/hr
Comments:

We had to do 3 loop of the bicycle course. The 1st loop was ok but it took me a while to get used to cycling after the swim. Besides, the head wind was strong on the loop towards Pasir Panjang. For the next 2 loops, I just try to maintain my cadence and stop occasionally to hydrate and took the GU gels. There were quite a number of people with flat tyres along the way. Thank goodness, mine was ok.

The 3rd loop was lonelier. There were lesser bikes on the road. Some people that I passed were going very slowly. I saw 2 of them pushing their bikes up the slope. On the way back to ECP, I feel very good and motivated especially after clearing the Sheares Bridge for the final time.
Transition 2
  • 05m 52s
Run
  • 2h 42m 29s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 07m 42s  min/km
Comments:

I decided that if I am going to last for 21.1km, I have to go slow and easy. As I run, I felt the abrasion on my armpit. It felt very sore. As I run, I bumped into other friends who are already doing their 2nd or 3rd loop. Every opportunity to drink I will drink. I would pour water above my head to keep cool. Despite the weather being cloudy at some point, I felt very dehydrated and burnt.

There were quite a number of people cramping along the running loop. Some were seen limping while others walking. Before the start of my 3rd loop, some friends cheered me on. It felt great. That helps to give me the energy required to complete 7km more to the finishing line. On the last km before heading to the finishing, I felt relieved that it is going to be over. Crossing the finishing line feels damn good. The time was 07:35:41 hrs. Steven, Jimmy and Jordon was at the finishing line to give me a high five. Chris finished a while later. Bumped into my ex colleague who participated in the team event. It was a great feeling to finished.
Post race
Event comments:

It was quite well organized on the whole. The course was better than previous year but could have been wider for the bike.
