Swim
Comments: This was tough. I hung back at the beginning just to give myself some space. My head was really killing me and I wanted to have space to collect myself and start out slow. Unfortunately, when I got my head in the water, my head hurt more and I couldn't catch my breath. I also kept thinking about how hard it was going to be to sight so I overwhelmed myself and had to flip on my back to relax. Luckily, that first 100 yards flew by and I had it all under control. I really made up some distance and I passed a lot of people. I did get caught in the "breast stroke bubble" which made it difficult to pass some people. So I just swam it in and got out. What would you do differently?: warm up so I knew what I was getting into with the headache. I would have also prepared my breathing. I'm happy with making up the time and it didn't feel much harder. Transition 1
Comments: Wow, 4 minutes! I need to work on that. I think it was also the rain. I had to get my feet clean from all the muck and the rain/fatigue made it a little harder. What would you do differently?: I can't take too long to get everything together. I'm just usually so tired running in that I take a minute to catch my breath, but I can't. I need to cut 2 minutes off that time. Cleaning off my feet is the hardest, bucket might be in order next time. Bike
Comments: Great bike ride, desptite the rain that felt like hail at some points. The volunteers weren't completely on their game because we'd hit a turn and they would tell us last minute that there was a turn. I wasn't happy about that. Also, some riders would slow down at intersections where traffic was stopped for us and it caused a back up. I loved the route and was very happy with my pace. I could have gone faster and I dropped my water bottle half way through so I couldn't hydrate enough. There was also a car parked in the middle of the road at the bottom of a windy downhill. We had to swerve around him to the right into a puddle which really pissed me off. What would you do differently?: - Tire pack on back of bike. I took it off for the drive, but I should leave it on. I forgot to put it on and could have given it to someone who had popped their tires. - Gu on the bike. I had to stick it in my back pocket and it would have been better so I didn't have to peel off the top. Transition 2
Comments: Did a great job with this one. I should have done a moving dismount, but I didn't because of the weather. I had a little trouble getting off because my skin stuck to the seat (I looked like an idiot) Who would think you'd need to work on dismounting a bike? What would you do differently?: Work on dismounting while moving. Run
Comments: I was really happy with my run. I started off slow and thought I was going to have to walk at first, they always start these things up hill. But when I got my second wind (or third) I busted through it. I was passed by quite a bit of people, but I happend to finish before a girl who blew past me. (i'm not sure how that happened) I sprinted like nuts to that finish line. I even did really well up some of the tough hills by just looking up to the top. I like trail runs (haven't really done them) and the trees kept us somewhat dry. What would you do differently?: Practice trail runs and stronger at the start. This is my weakest leg. I could also sprint a little earlier to the finish line. I felt like I could have gone for another mile which makes me feel like I'm strong enough to speed up. A little pissed that my mile/minute was slower than what I thought. Post race
Warm down: None... I need to work on that What limited your ability to perform faster: Headache was key.... I was really frustrated with the start of my swim because I couldn't get my breath under control and my headache was making it worse. But the meds kicked in and I got it together. Rain was tough too. Event comments: They needed to educated their volunteers and teh volunteers needed to be more vocal. At points on the bike, we were practically passed the turn and they would yell "right!" and we'd have to swerve to make it. It was also frustrating to have people yelling at you to get out of the transition area in the beginning and stressing everyone out. It felt like, even though you were on time and needed one or two more minutes to double check your spot, they were going to start without you (which they weren't). Their pre-race announcements were muffled and hard to listen to and the swim course was confusing until they finally explained it. All in all it was a great race, but needed a little more organization in the rain. Last updated: 2008-09-14 12:00 AM

Red bull and a bagel. The football game the night before tired me out so I was slow starting. I wanted to get out earlier but it was tough. a bagel with peanut butter and a cold red bull got me going but I think I should have had a luna bar. i was a little hungry at the start. Also, that pounding headache I've had all week hit hard this morning and I was worried that I might not even be able to compete. not to mention it was raining.
None. I need to work on that. it was chilly so I sent Niki into the water to try out her wetsuit. I wanted to get in some stretching and I only got in a little bit. I wanted to run a little, ride a little and swim a little... and mainly stretch stretch stretch. I'll do that the next race.
