Swim
Comments: I had heard all about the swimming portion of triathlons - the crowds of people all heading to the same place. I can't say that really bothered me, but the chill of the water took my breath away and before I knew it I was inhaling a bunch of water. After sputtering and trying to recover, I focused on technique and tried to get in a groove - but to no avail. Everytime my face went in the water it seemed that I was inhaling/swallowing more water and it doesn't really feel good. Most of the time in the water I was doing a backstroke as that was the only position I felt I could breath in, but when I looked up there were a few times I was beginning to go off course. Needless to say, as much I was convinced I was never going to make it to shore, eventually it was over and the fun began. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Somehow I need to prepare for waves. Transition 1
Comments: I was trying to stay speedy, but did find myself forgetting to put my shorts on before my shoes and once spaced out for a few seconds. What would you do differently?: Have to work on being a bit faster and more efficient. Bike
Comments: Biking felt great! There were a few minor hills, but this is where I got to pass a bunch of people. At times I probably wasn't as aggressive as I should have been as I was quite aware of road traffic and some turns were rather sharp. Half way through biking the rain was driving down. It really felt good as I stayed cool - just had to wipe the rain out of the eyes at times. Transition 2
Run
Comments: I usually run with music going in my ear, so I never realized how loud breathing can sound when that is all you are listening to. I was breathing pretty hard for most of the run, but the rest of my body felt good - so I just forged ahead. Some of the mudding places were a little rough. There were little hills around every turn and at one time I was convinced we were going to end at the top of a mountain. Throughout the race most of the women were pretty laid back and friendly, so it was nice to make a comment or two as you are passing. The finish line came none too soon and it felt great to have accomplished something this challenging. Post race
Warm down: Walked around some, got lots of hugs from my kids, drank lots of water. My husband was nice enough to lift my bike onto the car and I inhaled a bagel with cream cheese. What limited your ability to perform faster: The swimming threw me off a bit, but otherwise I am pretty happy with how I did. Event comments: It would have been nicer if there wasn't so much RAIN, but otherwise it was a nice race. Last updated: 2008-09-14 12:00 AM

This was my first triathlon, so my nerves were very high. Had trouble sleeping the night before, so I didn't have much trouble getting up for 5:30. Made myself pancakes and tofu for breakfast, my husband and I woke the kids and we were off. When I got to Winding Trails it was pretty easy to get set up, get marked and had plenty of time for final hugs from my family.
Took a little jog down the street and back. It helped to get some nervous energy out and get the blood moving.
