Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5. Got to the race at 640.
Event warmup:

The ocean was too rough so the swim was replaced by a sand run so my warmup was a jog to the start.
Swim
  • 04m 6s
  • 1175 yards
  • 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

The sand was packed so it made it easy to run on in running shoes. Took my time and stayed in the middle of the pack.
Transition 1
  • 02m 33s
Comments:

Had a hard time finding my bike. Once I did, the change was easy since I was only switching shoes, putting on a helmet and eating a gu. Mounting the bike was horrible. I ran ahead of some people who mounted right at the mount line. I tried to get going before clipping in but it took a few tries to do that. Not good.
What would you do differently?:

Know where the bike is. Clip in per ususal.
Bike
  • 1h 17m 23s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.27 mile/hr
Comments:

Wind at the back going out but it was real tough coming back. I am not the fastest biker and while I don't get blown away anymore I still don't like where I place in this part of the tri. First year with this course set up and it was great. I wanted to be over 20 but the wind killed that idea.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Buy a tribike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Found my rack with no problems. Removed helmet, switched shoes, grabbed a gu and I'm off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 43m 10s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

Once I left the parking lot I took off. I had the wind at my back and alot of people in sight. I decided to really push the 1st 5K and hold on as best I could into the wind on the way back. I passed a bunch of people and hit the 5k at 20:30. I knew it would be a lot slower coming back and there were less people to go after. My avg. pace went down to 7:20. I was hoping to have an avg. below 7:00 for the 10k and did that. I was 170th after the bike so I gained 70 spots on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wind.

Event comments:

It seems like the organizers got it right after last year's train wreck. The ironic part is that for the last 2 years the race was held on a Sunday. If they did that this year, the ocean would have been flat and there was no wind. Oh well- it's always a gamble with ocean swims. This is the 4th year I've done this race and only had to swim twice.
