Pre-race routine:

I was a wait lister and didn't find out I had a spot in the race until Tuesday, 5 days, before the race. No big deal because I hadn't planned a taper for this race anyway, but I couldn't find a hotel room and had to drive up in the morning. Got up at 2:15, so my typical pre-race food needed to be modified. Added a bagel and cliff bar enroute as I was getting hungry.
Event warmup:

about 200 yard swim. The whole weigh in line took way too long. Not sure why they didn't do the weigh in at registration like they do at Rock N' Rollman in Macon. I think someone screwed up, and forgot. Anyway this line pushed my whole timing off and I didn't get a proper warmup.

What would you do differently?:

tuck my watch under my wetsuit sleeve.
Transition 1
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

Took forever to get wetsuit off. And to think when they were trying to get me to buy one size smaller for the perfect fit. It takes me 15 minutes to put the thing on and seems like just as long to get the damn thing off. Oh how I miss the wetsuit strippers in an IM. I couldn't get my left foot into my shoe on the bike. When pedaling on top of the shoes I smashed the shoe flat (typical), but the shoe wouldn't open up for me. I nearly coasted to a complete stop while getting it in....all the while my sunglasses were completely fogged up and I couldn't see. OMG, were their some "non family" language in my head and some "under breadth" I'm sure. Just terrible, and pissed me off!
What would you do differently?:

May consider cutting a little length off of the legs on my suit to help get it off easier.

Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Couldn't roll my socks on, which cost me about 15 - 20 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

bring a chair so I can sit down....J/k
Run
  • 1h 27m 15s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 06m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

A couple folks look like they only did 1 lap (unless they are 2:05 marathoners). They were DQ'd, so I didn't include them in the overall ranking. Pleased with my run and wish there were a couple guys I spotted to go after, but it was so hard to figure out where folks were at with the wave starts. Nutritian was good and didn't have any issues.
What would you do differently?:

maybe push the middle a bit more.

Event comments:

Didn't like the lines to weigh in. Rushed my pre-race prep.

Course: Sun in eyes first half. I have tinted goggles so it wasn't an issue. Got kicked in the right goggle at about the 750 yard mark as I was passing some guys from an earlier wave. This was the first time this has happened to me, been lucky. Caught me off guard and I sucked in some water and spend 10-15 seconds hacking. Also, I typically have my wetsuit sleeve partially over my watch for better aerodynamics on my entry. Well didn't do it this time and my watch strap came updone twice. Not totally undone, but the strap came out of the safety loop thing after the clasp. I was worried it would just fall off in the water, so I stopped for a couple stroke to put it back in...twice.

This split was really different from my watch (about 4 minutes). One of the guys I passed coming into transition, who I ran out of transition with had a 4 minute faster split....hmmmm. My final watch time was pretty much right on, so I don't think it was a wave error.
Wind: Some
Course: some rolling hills, but the biggest issue for me was the rough roads. It really broke my concentration, especially for miles 40-50. At about mile 20 a pack of pretty quick guys came up on me and I though if I hung on to these guys it would sufficiently push me, which was one of my race plans, to really push on the bike. I made sure to keep the 7 meters back as I am not a drafter! At mile 25 I looked up and noticed the 2 guys in front of me had been dropped and then looked at my HR and noticed I was bearly in zone 1. I passed these 2 guys and saw the pack about a 1/4 mile up and tried to work to catch them, which I never did. I really blew it at that point.

Course: Wish they would have had mile markers every mile. There wasn't one until mile 3. Thats a long time to not get a split. I don't race with my GPS as I don't / won't wait for it to link to the satelites, so no pacing info. Sometimes I ask someone I notice wearing a 305, but didn't see anyone with one.
