Pre-race routine:

Slept poorly the nite before...there is a big surprise. Woke up on my own at 5:30 and sucked back my usual latte and choked back half a bagel with peanut butter. DH was running a 5k so that meant we had to be there early!
Event warmup:

My warm up consisted of jumping up and down and trying not to freeze to death after peeling off my layers!!

Comments:

Great for my first half marathon experience. I started out looking for the 2:15 pace bunny...realized there was not one so I lined up with the 2:20 bunny and met some other first timers.
The gun went off and it was so crowded that it took a good couple of minutes to get to the timing mat.

I began by trying to run with the 2:20 group but soon realized that this was going to be way too slow, so I pulled ahead. I fell in step with some military guys who were planning a 2:15 and ran with them until they took a walk break.I don't stop to walk and was not going to start now!

I really enjoyed every step, loved running in a crowd, which is so very different from the run portion of a tri. I concentrated on keeping my pace conservative, and was glad I had the Garmin to keep me in check.

After the 10k mark I still felt fantastic so I started to speed things up a bit. My husband popped out of nowhere on his bike to cheer me on at the km markers. With 7k to go I really started to speed up when I realized that I was going to be able to beat my time goal.

Honestly it was still fun until about the 19k mark, at which point I felt a painful knot deevop in my left outer quad, every step became sore. I carried on ,passing people and with about 3k to go theright quad thought it would torture me as well!!

So the last 3k were very painful, I was no longer smiling but I crossed the finish line triumphantly. Came in well under my goal time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!
Post race
Warm down:

Could barely walk my quads hurt so much, I hydrated the DH and I made our way slowly back to the car. Ice bath as soon as I got home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

If my quads had not seized up I could have gone a little faster at the end. Cardiowise it was good.

Event comments:

Having never run a half marathon before I have nothing to compare this to, but it was a great day. Can't wait to do another!
