Swim
Comments: n/a-- ocean swim was cancelled due to high rip currents and replaced with a 1.5K beach run. What would you do differently?: Nothing-- glad I wore my running shoes on the beach, as I felt like I had better footing (and especially since we were one of the last waves to go and, as a result, the beach was pretty roughed up by the time we ran.) Transition 1
Bike
Comments: Wind gusts were 20-25 MPH (maybe even a bit stronger). Headwind for most of the course, especially the second half headed back to the transition area. Made the ride extremely tough! What would you do differently?: I need aerobars...this was only my second triathlon (and first olympic distance) so I haven't made that jump yet but after this race, I think I'll get them for next season. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Running is my strength, so this is where I caught everyone who passed me on the bike. My time was a 10K PR for me. Must have been the flat course! Post race
Warm down: Went to the post-race picnic and watched the awards ceremony. What limited your ability to perform faster: The winds and cold weather, although I have to admit that not having the swim definitely worked in my favor, as I am a strong runner and cyclist. I hate the swim but was still disappointed to not get to do my first ocean/wetsuit swim (and I even rented a wetsuit!!!) Event comments: A very-well organized event; can't control for the weather so there really wasn't much that the organizers could do given the ocean conditions. I was surprised at how small the race was, although a lot of registered racers may have dropped out when the swim was cancelled (or when they saw the weather report). I stayed in Rehobeth Beach (approx.20 minutes north) so I woke up and drove down to the resort. We still didn't know whether or not the swim would take place, but given the weather/beach reports that morning (coastal flooding warnings, rip tides) I was pretty sure we wouldn't be swimming. Ate a bagel and power bar on the way.
Chatted with other racers and debated whether or not to wear shoes on the beach run once we found out the swim would, in fact, be cancelled. I decided not to, as I had done some beach running (luckily) on a recent vacation and knew that I felt more comfortable with shoes on, despite the risk that they'd get sand in them. Tried not to freeze to death- decided to wear long-sleeved shirt on the beach run, since the beach felt about 10 degrees colder than the parking lot (with wind factor), and to take it off before the bike.
