Swim
Comments: I was surprisingly calm/confidant as I stood on the beach. I thought the start was a bit sloppy as I could not hear the starter. When the siren went I was caught off guard. “Fight or flight” kicked in about 100m in but I was able to get thru it. It seemed like there were a fair about of people turning back and that caused some panic in my mind. Sighting was impossible and I really was just trying to follow other swimmers. Going directly into the waves to that far right buoy was brutal. I seem to finally get into a rhythm (if you can call it that) after the turn but still getting hit from the side by the waves. With about 300m left I felt the zipper on my suit go. I think the quick release was not secured correctly to start. Did the rest of the swim with the back open. Made for a quicker transition I guess. What would you do differently?: Have someone zip me up rather than do it myself. Honestly just happy to have survived that swim. Great experience/confidence builder. Transition 1
Comments: Feet were numb from water and running on the gravel Bike
Comments: First hill pretty tough way to start things out and was worried my bad calf would tighten up if I got out of the saddle. I thought the course was pretty well marked and several volunteers helped. Some confusion at the end of the first loop, make a left back to the parking lot or right and keep going? What would you do differently?: Know the course better. Probably could have pushed it harder on the hills. Would have liked to have had my ave MPH 20+ Transition 2
Comments: Right calf was very tight. Smeared some ben-gay on both calves. Probably slowed me down but was afraid they might tighten up on the run. Run
Comments: Felt surprisingly good. Again not knowing the course well made it hard to know how hard to push it. Some confusion on where to go on the first lap vs the finish. Had a really strong kick, probably could have gone harder. Post race
Warm down: Walking around, stretching. More stretching after 2hr car ride back to the city What limited your ability to perform faster: I trained way too hard during the week because I didnt even decide on doing Cedar Beach until Thursday. DNF in the Montauk sprint last wk (bike problem), was unacceptable to finish the season on that note in my mind. Event comments: Mental toughness race for me. Ending the season on a good note and surviving the swim in those condions makes offseason training for my first Olympic distance much better. Last updated: 2008-10-14 12:00 AM

4:00 AM wake up, left NYC by 4:20. Traffic on the LIE was brutal (how is that possible at 4:30 AM?) so added nerves about being late. Coffee and a banana for breakfast. 1 Hammer Gel and sipped on some Gatorade 30 min before race.
Light jogging, fair amount of stretching...trying to stay warm. Right calf was very tight/sore, hard time getting it loose. Wetsuit on 6:40ish.
