Overall Rank = 222/668
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 20/39
Pre-race routine:

Took the bike for a quick spin once I got there (5am), racked everything and found a place to sit down. Had a bagel with peanut butter and banana.
Event warmup:

Did a quick swim 10 minutes before the race started.
Swim
  • 42m 1s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was fairly windy and the water was rough. Need to practice swimming in rough water. Lots of contact with other swimmers.

Estimated effort - 85%
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice swimming in rougher waters.
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

They had wetsuit strippers which managed to get my suit off my entire body in less then 2 seconds. Greatly sped up the transition. Got quite sandy putting shoes and socks on. 16/39.
Bike
  • 2h 52m 4s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Tried to take the bike easy. Lots of coasting on the steep down hills and took it easy climbing on the 1st lap. Had 5 Gu's on the bike separated by ever 40-45 minutes. They were handing out Gatorade and water so I was able to re-fill the aero bottle twice.

Lap 1: 60-70% effort, estimated HR 140-150 (zone 2).
Climbing: 80% effort, estimated HR 160-170 (zone 3, low zone 4)
Lap 2: 75% effort, estimated HR 150-160 (zone 2, low 3). Effort level increased to 80% about half way through lap as fatigue started to set in.
Climbing: 90% effort, 170-185 at times.
Total: effort Level 80%, avg estimated HR 155
What would you do differently?:

Need more saddle time. Saddle soreness and sore neck made it hard to stay in the aero position during the final 8 miles.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Quick and easy transition. 14/39
Run
  • 1h 41m 44s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt great over 1st 7 miles. Hit the hill the second time and my quads starting hurting. Able to recover some on the down hill, but the last three miles were fairly painful. Ate 3 shot blocks over the run.

- 1st 9 miles, effort level 80%, estimated HR 160 (zone 2).
- Climbing effort 90-95%, estimated HR 175-185 (zone 4/5).
- 9-13, effort level 95%, estimated HR 170 (zone 3). Cardio felt fine, quads were starting to give out.
Total: 90% effort, avg estimated HR (167) (zone 3).

Post race
Warm down:

Food.

Event comments:

Endorfun puts on a great race from start to finish and has great support. I highly recommend them as a race company. The weather was perfect for a race that long also. Never felt overheated.
