Swim
Comments: This was a good swim for me. I tried to swim buoy to buoy so as not to get off course. I was cognizant of looking for draft when I could get it and I tried to focus on keeping my stroke in tact. I had to fend off other swimmers a few times during the course of my swim, especially the red caps that caught up to my wave. These were the relay folks so likely there were some really kick azzz swimmers in the group -- several of whom swam over me. I got smacked and did some smacking and generally, it was a jolly good time! What would you do differently?: Nothing really... Transition 1
Comments: Pretty good transition. About the same as last year. Struggled getting my socks onto my wet feet... What would you do differently?: Choose different socks that are easier to get on. Bike
Comments: I had hoped to do a bit better on the bike. Would have been great to finish closer to 3:05, but I wasn't too far off last years' time so I can't be too hard on myself. The first year I raced Mooseman, I had my fastest bike split and I've slipped from there the last two races. I'm starting to wonder if the compact and the 12/25 are not working that well for me... What would you do differently?: Not sure what I'd do differently. This course is tough. You're either doing 4-9 MPH or 28-35 MPH. There is no cruising for long periods. Its mostly up with a few good downhills. It beats the shite out of ya. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty zippy transition. Half the time it took last year! What would you do differently?: Make sure my sunscreen was open and ready to be applied. I had a brand new can that I couldn't use because I had opened for the first time yet and didnt want to waste time messing with. Run
Comments: Again this year, this was my best split. Which surprises me every time... Getting started I felt kinda cooked. My hamstrings were feeling the ride for sure. I tried to just find a rhythm that felt comfortable and sustainable. For me, this usually means slowing myself down a bit. Mentally, I was feeling a little of that "I don't feel like doing this". But, as I got further in and started to see the miles go by, I began to feel more motivated. I started to focus on the sub six goal, but I already knew what I was up against. Basically, i had two hours to get this run done. No fudge time to work within, so the pressure was on. When you see those hills up ahead at the top of the run course, it really challenges you mentally and kicks your azzz physically. I'd had to pee since I'd left transition but didn't want to wait in line at the cans in TA or at the first aid station. At the top of the hill at the corner where the course turns there was a porto perched on some boulders. It was unoccupied so I went for it. Got in there and thought the damned thing might topple over! Did my business quickly and carefully and got the heck out! My one minute...? I did the first loop in pretty good time. Well under an hour so was starting really to think the sub 6 was there. The second loop, however, got challenging. I had to walk here and there as I was starting to feel out of gas. I only allowed myself to walk for a few seconds though and kept pushing toward the finish. Once I was headed back in from the second loop, I used the downhills to my advantage and tried to keep the momentum on the flats and rollers. I walked here and there but never for too long. I got to a point where I felt sure that I would not make the sub 6 and maybe let go a little bit, but because I couldn't be sure I made myself keep pushing. Finally got into the park. A long run in the sand just really sucked and I had to get around this couple in front of me. Once I got off the sand, I tore it up the shoot thinking there might be a chance. The clock said 6:16:0?. I was thinking that if I started at 7:20 that morning I must be sub 6, but my watch was telling otherwise. My sherpa and P and C were congratulating me on the sub 6, but I wasn't gonna believe it 'til I saw it in black & white -- which was good, because it didnt happen... What would you do differently?: Nothing really. I pushed hard on the run and am very pleased with my effort and my overall pace on that tough course. I ran just slightly faster than last year and it was a strong, solid effort after a tough bike. All good! Post race
Warm down: Got my schwag. Got some food. Walked the 10 miles with all my gear back to the middle of nowhere where we were parked. What limited your ability to perform faster: No limits. I performed well and to the best of my ability. A PR for the course. Event comments: Love this race and venue. These folks put on a great event and I'm sure I'll be back for another beating! Up at 5: after a lousy nights' sleep. Put on my tri shorts and top and took care of last minute gear details. Noted the choppy waters on the lake and began to hope it would settle down a bit before the race start. Made some oatmeal mixed with banana and yogurt. Drank a boost and tried not to puke. For some reason was feeling nauseous. Prob just the result of feeling the nerves and trying to eat on top of that.
Me and my sherpa headed to the race site, parked in the middle of nowhere and walked the ten or so miles to the transition area. Got body marked and went in to set up my transition. Realized I forgot a hat for the run and my sherpa insisted on getting me one from the expo — ka-ching! Got my stuff set up and found my rack mates to be very friendly and accommodating. Nice for a change :). Began working my way into my wetsuit.
Working my way into my wetsuit was all the workout I needed to get warm. Got thrown out of transition and met up with my sherpa and P and C. Posed for a few closeups and headed down to the water. I got into the water right away and swam a little to warm up and get acclimated. Realized I had forgotten my ear plugs and stressed that I'd get dizzy from the cold water. My sherpa ran back to TA to get them out of my bag, but couldn't find them. Surprised they let him into TA at all, but totally appreciated his effort to go get them!
