Run
Comments: Ran with MLK. Our goal was to run between 1:25-1:30 so we hit that perfectly. We started out faster than planned, which had Matt a bit worried, mostly thanks to the downhill start more than really being on the gas. We both felt really controlled throughout the race. At mile ~8, I could tell my stomach was getting touchy. We had thought about picking up the pace as both of us had plenty in the tank. I figured the time we would gain by running faster would be more than lost by the time I would spend in the toilet! So we cruised at our steady pace. Because the start was in the high 20s, I wored a tri jersey under a l/s race shirt with shorts, beanie, craft gloves. I felt comfortable. I we were running really hard, I would have probably ditched the l/s and beanie. Did not consume any food or drink on course and felt fine. What would you do differently?: A billed hat might be nice to keep the sun out when heading west. Had my Oakleys, but didn't do much. For a training day, this was about as good as we could have hoped for. Very solid pacing. Though there was some variation between miles, that was more a function of terrain than effort level. I would definitely eat a better diet before the race. Even though it's a training day, it would have been nice not to have to worry about stomach Post race
Warm down: Walked around finish area and ate two bananas, power ade, slice of fresh bread (which was yummy). Walked back to hotel and stretched. What limited your ability to perform faster: Just the goal - we definitely could have pushed the pace a bit more, but I felt like it would have only gained us a minute or so. For no race specific prep and no taper, this was about as good as I expected us to do. Event comments: I doubt I would travel to Charlotte again to do this race - but it was a really fun day. I loved having so many hotel options right near start and finish. The finish area was one of the best I've ever seen. Even had the restaurant Noodles there, giving out freebies. The lamest part: shirts. I would have paid a few more bucks to get a technical shirt that I would actually wear. Trade in the medal and the crap we were given, add $5 per entry - and you're there! Day before:
-Lunch: chipotle chicken burrito w/lettuce, black beans, cheese, corn and mild salsa
-Snack: chili
-Dinner: friend chicken, yams, corn bread and a bunch of cookies.
This is clearly the pre-race routine of a champion. Or a diabetic. Maybe a champion diabetic?
The power was out at our hotel, so we went out and drove the race course. I had heard this as pretty hilly - not true at all. Some mild rollers, but no big climbs. Got home and to sleep by 11:30. Didn't sleep all that great. I was awoken by all the lights coming on at 1:30a - though that was pretty funny.
Up at 6:30 am. It was great to be staying so close to the start. Had a power bar right away with 1.5 cups of black team. Stomach felt pretty nasty, which is weird because my diet from the day before was so strict...
Had a uncaffeinated gel at about 7:40 before we left the room. Got out to the start. Jogged for 10 mins with a few pick ups. Felt pretty good.
