Pre-race routine:

Nothing special, up at 5AM, bagel with PBJ, took dog for a walk, left for race at 6:20 AM
Event warmup:

Did about a 1-mile run. Felt OK.
Swim
  • 05m 18s
  • 250 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim felt good. Ranked right in the middle as usual. I am just a slow swimmer, so if I get thru it feeling good, I consider it a win.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Really happy with my T1. Got in my shoes quickly and on the bike with no stopping or delay. It is much faster to go without socks.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 30m 17s
  • 9.1 miles
  • 18.03 mile/hr
Comments:

After having a day to reflect on it, I am not very pleased with my bike segment. Looking at my HR data, I really didn't push it as hard as I am capable of doing. Had a little mishap about halfway thru the course as I bumped wheels with another rider. Not sure how that happened, but neither one of us went down thankfully. That kind of thru me off for a while. Need to get more intensity on the bike during training.
What would you do differently?:

Stay aero, push it a little more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

A little slow here getting my bike shoes off and putting on socks. Lace locks were great getting running shoes on. The really delay here was fumbling with my race number belt. I need to find one that just snaps closed rather than the one I have that has velcro and a loop.
Run
  • 23m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt bad getting of the bike. Couldn't get into a rythm and struggled for the first mile. Started feeling good after the turnaround and I am sure I was faster on the way back. I really like this course, but just didn't have it today. Been struggling with some hip pain recently which I hope will be cleared up with new orthotics and some rest. Plan to lay off the running for a week or so.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure I could have done more today ... it just wasn't there.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Honestly ... I feel beat up. I probably need some time off, but I just don't seem to be able to take it. I have been training non-stop for about 7 years with no more than a day off here or there. A week off would probably do me some good.

Event comments:

I love small races and consider this to be one of my favorites. It is a great venue, they do a great job controlling traffic and really seem proud to put on a top-notch event.
