Pre-race routine:

Had a relatively good night sleep. At 3:00am I realized I had lost my blankey. Brrrr.... Up at 7:00. Tummy upset and nose draining like a sieve. Muttered around made coffee. Had kashi and yogurt and grape juice. Couple R-stops and was fairly prepared when Ken go here. Even remembered to tires for Mike and some foam art things for the girls. Uneventful trip up picked up Mike on the way.
Got number and chip. Peed and sat in truck a little. Tummy calmed and nose finished draining for the most part. Drank coffee and water while we waited. Decided to take an 8oz flask with me.
Event warmup:

Ran down the road about 2/10 of a mile and back. Walked a little. Stretched and realized we were in the front of the pack. Backed up to midway.

Comments:

The start was like silent, of a sudden we were moving. Ken and Mike caught a couple good breaks and were able to move out ahead. Good for them. Finally got a little room at 1/2 mile. I was kinda figuring that if they were that fast I must be having a slow day. Oh well these are training races. I thought have a little fun take it easy. Legs felt good. New sneakers are great. We make it to the first mile marker and hit the lap button. 7:45. Great screwed up the watch. We'll see at the net mile what it is. Pass a few people. Got a nice little piece of race booty ahead of me. I can handle this pace.
Mile two it says 7:52. OK I can do this. Those guys must be flying. Nice Ken is trying to break 50 minute mark and he has a good start. Mike must be redlining it. Made it to the 3 mile mark without passing those guys going the other way. Hey I'm doing OK. Pace slipping but legs feel good. The hills seem longer returning. Mental daemons say you can walk look at that first mile. Draw a little inspiration from last weeks run. Say that was 13.5 miles and there was no quitting or waking. Hit the second last hill. A killer but run up it. The new shoes help me do a little more forefoot running always helpful uphill. I can see Ken out a little ways not going to make a run at him. Hit the last hill. Mike is there finished and telling to run faster so I do. got to see the clock with 49:00 minutes on it but a ways to go. Hey I got a good race going a short distance. I try to lift my leg to get the chip off but no go. Ask politely if you could bend down and take it off. Thanks. round the shoot and Hi-five Mike and Ken trying to smile through the heavy breathing. I;m spent left it all and some on the course.
What would you do differently?:

4 minutes faster what do you want Ron.
Tie right shoe a little more carefully the lace kept hitting left ankle. Annoying!
May have eaten more as I felt a little empty at mile 5.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and stood. Walked to truck and put on a dry shirt and hat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Yanking extra 30 pounds up the hills.

Event comments:

Well its the end of the Freeeroo series for 2008-9. Colder then last year. Dam global warming. The 5K at 4 degrees was the coldest I ran in and hope its my last. New years race was the worse road condition felt like I ran 10 miles in a 7 mile space. 8-miler was one of my best mental and physical efforts without coaching from Mike. Met a few new people. Got to know the Montana Milers Club here in Canandaigua. I made all 6 races. Thanks Y and Will. Thanks to the Greater Rochester Track Club for putting them on. Thanks for driving to them Ken. Thanks to Mike for dragging me into more running I can almost say I like it. Sorry boys you didn't make them all. Off to the RIT indoor Tri in a couple weeks. Need to bring the swim volume up and hope for warmth to hit the hills on the bike. Thanks for reading but like the best of the race this report is over.
