Swim
Comments: Swim was good overall. No panic attack this time, Felt comfortable the entire time. I had to go back near the end because i apparently went the wrong way around the marker..not sure how 6 inches to the right is a huge difference but whatever-so lost a minute or two there. Also had to re-join the pack a few times, as I didn't sight and wound up off to the side. i was happy that i was passing people in the swim that started 3-4 waves ahead of me. So all that considered the swim went ok. What would you do differently?: Practice sighting more, and concentrating during the race on my catch and pull. Felt it not go full a bunch of times because of other external things. need to stop that. Transition 1
Comments: getting the wetsuit off was a pain. It got stuck on my lower legs so i lost some time there. Also took me a second to collect myself and make sure my helmet was buckled before unracking etc... Definately need to work on this transtion. What would you do differently?: get the suit off quicker, start learning the shoes already clipped in method of getting out of T1 so i can gain some time there. basically just make it flow better than I did. Bike
Comments: bike was horrendous. period. I didn't know which gear to be in on the hill part, as I don't practice near any hills, and was absolutely destroying my quads trying to get up the bridge the first time before a fellow racer told me to downshift, and that made it easier. Just a rough day out there on the bike for me. getting passed by many people. hard to handle after a strong start to the race. Definately overhydrated, with me beating on my quads like that coupled with this being my first oly, i just drank too much. almost my entire aerobottle filled with water/gu2o, and 1 bottle of water. felt bloated getting off bike. What would you do differently?: bike WAY more outside-less on trainer, try to find some hills-even if i have to drive to them! I am going to start an 8-week Bike focused training plan as I feel this is needed NOW for me to have a strong rest of the season. So i will be outside all the time training and hoping to see a better time and pace for next oly. Transition 2
Comments: have no idea why the time was this high, although i did have to run quite a ways through transition to get to my area. I racked bike, threw off helmet, threw on pre-rolled socks and running shoes and was off! What would you do differently?: not really sure, i guess just try to speed it up even more. practice more. Run
Comments: due to poor bike, definately did not feel as well as I should have. stomach was bloated to the max with water. I ate a GU as i hit the begining of the run out of transition, so i had to drink more water after that, so i had one cup from volunteer. Trails were CROWDED, so it made it difficult to gauge passing and pace. I feel I did ok here. Had to work through stomach cramps for almost all 6.2 miles, and a left quad cramp that started with 2 miles left to go. Never EVER walked and kept my pace while focusing on how well i was doing for my first olympic. What would you do differently?: drink less water on bike, and focus more on keeping my core temp cool with water dumping on my head. Did that for last 3 miles and it helped ALOT! Post race
Warm down: Felt like i was going to vomit, probably from the all out sprint I gave at the end (how do we finish? WE FINISH STRONG!) wife was awesome, got me couple bottles of water and a banana. I knew my stomach was whacked out, so I told her no banana and that I needed liquid carbs for the re-fuel, so she grabbed me a venga re-hydrate that worked like a charm! 20 minutes later I was as good as new. thanks Venga! What limited your ability to perform faster: my overconsumption of water, and the horrible bike portion. Yes, i could have shaved probably 5-7 minutes of my total time if i wasn't so lacksidaisy in transition or on the swim if i sighted better, but other than that i need way more biking outside. Event comments: I loved this race. It would have gotten 5 stars if they didn't RUN OUT OF WATER, in the expo area/finish. how does that even happen? otherwise, a memorable first olympic race, volunteers were great! Got up at the hotel at 3:50 am, took out my pre-packed oats and banana, made the oatmeal and ate the banana. Drank 17 ounces of water.
Woke the wife up at 4:45 am, and we checked out, got our car, and started to head over to the race site.
Got to the site nice and early at about 5:15 am.
Went over to my bike and started setting up. once i set everything up, I went the bathroom, chatted with other athletes, and hung with the wife. Tried to visualize the course and figure out how i would approach the hilly part of the bike course.
