Swim
Comments: The traffic on the swim course was very heavy. Large AG wave and caught the two previous waves as well as the fast swimmers from the wave behind mixed in. I felt like I was swimming much better than the time reports. The traffic definitely slowed my pace. What would you do differently?: Maybe start more towards the front/middle of the pack... not sure, my training times were so much better than this swim, so I am just kinda at a loss... Race conditions are SOOOO much different than training! Transition 1
Comments: I had a great T1... because of the ROUGH pavement of TA, I chose to put my bike shoes on and run with the bike...no barefoot running! Secondly, the hill coming right out of transition...you had to be in your shoes for that sucker! What would you do differently?: Nothing really! Bike
Comments: I have never been passed by so many fast women on bicycles in all my life! I totally mean that as a compliment! I felt I was riding above my expectations for this course... I had slacked on my bike training, and the hills ~ they were brutal (6-7mph going up / 37mph coming down). I did nothing to prepare for that! Started to fell hungry on the bike ~ and that is a big No-No! I think that lead to a poor run and the nausea that came on. I felt like I had to pee the whole time I was on the bike... I even attempted to relieve myself and it was a no go! Stage fright I guess... What would you do differently?: Watch my time and take on nutrition accordingly! Waited too long to eat/nibble on the clif bar. One GU & 1 clif wasn't enough for the what followed! I have to get my mind right about nutrition! Transition 2
Comments: Good T2... except that I had to make a pit stop at the porta can to pee on the way out... that's why T2 is slower than T1. What would you do differently?: Pee on the bike I guess. Run
Comments: The worst run of my running/triathlon endeavors! I have never experienced nausea on a run before. I started out feeling pretty strong... first mile 7:32 pace, second mile 8:03 pace, third mile 8:23 pace... and then the nausea set in... walked the steep hill at mile 3 - 4 and tried running again at the top...followed closely by more nausea! This was the patteren that would plague the rest of the run. I never actually puked, but it felt like it could go at any time. Miles 6 - 9, took on water only, with fruit (bits of bananas & oranges) the stomach was feeling a little better, but the legs were really starting to feel the difficulty of the course. I did not take on any GU and very little Gatorade...for fear of pushing my stomach over the edge! What would you do differently?: Better nutrition on the bike I guess! HTFU maybe, I really don't know! Post race
Warm down: Wallow in my run misery and stretch a little. Cool wet towel on neck and took on some more nutrition... watermelon, oranges and bagel pieces. What limited your ability to perform faster: The big hills sapped my legs, NOT ENOUGH TRAINING!!! Poor nutrition. Event comments: A tough frickin' course for a flatlander. Woke up at 3:15, sipped on water, sugar-free Red Bull and ate a plain bagel with peanut butter and honey. Got to the race site at 4:30 and got body marked and set up transition. It was very cool and windy. Made a couple pit stops at the porta-cans, sipped on some Gatorade G2 and at 6:00 had a clif bar to top off nutrition.
Got wet suit on at about 6:15 and went for a short swim - roughly 100 meters out and 100 meters back. Felt good, nerves were fairly calm.
