Pre-race routine:

So the pre-race really starts a few days in advance--sleep, hydration, finishing the taper, etc. With that in mind I completely screwed it up with my sleep. Thursday night, two nights before the race, I managed to get exactly zero minutes of sleep. I had Friday off, was driving mid-day to NH and decided to play golf early that morning. Well 4:30am came and I was still wide awake...not good.

As far as actual pre-race: woke up at 4:45, a peice of PB toast, grabbed a coffee from Dunks and I was at the race start for body marking at 5:15.
Event warmup:

10 minute run, wetsuit on, in the water for about 200m slow warmup. Pretty much what I did before the Season Opener and it worked well there.

Comments:

So I've decided I know how to swim. I felt great in the water, I got kicked a few times, elbowed a few times, but remained calm in the water, didn't kick at all and really just cruised in for a very good time without exerting much effort at all. It's really been the revelation of the summer for me, I love that I can get out of the water at the front of the pack without having exerted myself at all. I'll get passed a million times from here on out but I at least give myself a solid lead.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it went great
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

Not a terrible transition, the suit strippers were great and I got the shoes on, helmet on and out of transition real quick. Slight issue getting on the bike and clipped in, but it only cost me a few seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to strap the shoes on during the bike.

Comments:

Once again I had a great bike, I only got passed by two rode bikes the entire time. A TON of tri bikes cruised past me...some of course had riders that would smoke me anyway, but there were certainly a chunk of riders that looked no stronger on the bike than me but just had the aero bike.

Good ride, though, I felt strong on the hills and really didn't lose steam at all, felt strong getting off the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Ummmm...get a tri bike? Other than that I felt good and the legs weren't bad for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

So getting into T2 I felt confident: the first tri I did I got the shoes off and feet on top no problem. This time...well this time was a disaster. I could not get my feet out of my shoes, probably because I biked with no socks this time and it was also drizzling, so the shoes were wet. I ended up getting the right foot out and the left foot unstrapped, but had to stop, dismount, and pull the left foot out before I could get into T2. That's another 5 seconds on the bike time, in additino to my slow start out of T1.
What would you do differently?:

Practice the shoes off dismount, especially with no socks.

Comments:

Awful...just disasterous. I saw my family coming out of T2, it really gave me a boost and my legs felt good and strong for a bit. But I just absolutely collapsed. I had to stop 4 different times, my left thigh cramped up big-time, I definitely had some GI distress, and just overall felt AWFUL for most of the run. I decided, at about the turnaround, that I just have to take it real slow, I stopped one more time and really calmed myself down, and then I really pushed myself to the finish. I forgot to get my split but I would say I was at about 12:30 minutes on the awy out and 11:30 coming back. It really is quite depressing leaving T2 almost in an AG podium position (5th) and losing two spots because I'm just terrible on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Keep running! I'm doing Boston in April so a winter of training should have me in the top quarter of my AG by next year.
Post race
Warm down:

Some walking, lots of food, stretch, meet up with my family (it was AWESOME having them there for this one, such great support and it definitely helped me on the last part of the run knowing they'd be cheering me on the last few hundred meters.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The run...transitions weren't great and not having a tri bike keeps me from being at the front of my AG there, but nothing would make me fly up the standings like having a solid run at the end.

Event comments:

I've only done two triathlon's but I will confidently say that this is one of the best you'll find in the Northeast. Just a fabulously run event, everything was organized to a T, tons of volunteers, lots of stuff to do for spectators at the event, a great course, a great expo...they just put on a great event and I'm psyched to be doing more of them next year.
