Swim
Comments: Just taking it easy for this swim, so I started at the back and also stayed to the outside. Got bumped by a few diagonal swimmers but nothing too bad. Drafted when I could and probably one of the best races I've ever had where I just felt good and completely comfortable in the water. Staying to the outside helped me round the buoys better and stay out of the tight corners. Probably swam a longer distance overall, but even with the easy swim (and only swimming once in the past 3+ weeks) I beat my time from last year by 23sec. What would you do differently?: Not too much, going into the race I would have been very happy beating my time from last year...which I did. I am happy. Transition 1
Comments: Not too bad. It's a long run from the water but all on cement. I was going to take my time and really felt like I did (I even walked some of it and took some time to drink), but my time was 4sec faster than last year. Guess I am getting more efficient! What would you do differently?: Nothing. I took my time, found my bike with no trouble, got everything on, and out I went. Bike
Comments: This is actually the only part of the race that I was disappointed with. Thought I could go a little faster. It is a hilly course and covering some nice roads (granted they had potholes) with chip seal really takes a toll when you are sitting there shaking constantly on the bike. I really could have used my climbing friendly rear cassette (still waiting on it to come in) on this one. If you look at the overall ranking the bike was my best event, but I could have done better. What would you do differently?: Go faster. Get back to training more on the bike and back on the hills. Transition 2
Comments: Another great transition. Got my feet out of the shoes on the bike and dismounted perfectly. Ran in and found my rack quickly...then I just slowed down and took my time again. Had a sip of drink, did 5-10sec of stretching, then just started to walk towards the transition exit. Once close to the exit I started running. I am going to do this more often, as it was the best I EVER felt on the run starting out. What would you do differently?: NOTHING!!! Run
Comments: Great run for me. Felt great coming off the bike and really ran well. Considering I've trained by running about 4.5mi this week after not running for 3 weeks, I am very happy! I did a 3.15mi run earlier this week (with no bike or swim before) and ran it in a 9:45 pace...so I ran this almost 1min/mi faster. I even beat my time from last year by about 25sec! The weather was still perfect as it stayed overcast and around 85 all race. What would you do differently?: NOTHING!! Post race
Warm down: Felt good after the race. Did some stretching and drinking. Overall I am extremely happy with my times and effort in this race. My goal was under 1:30:00 and my super goal was to beat last year (1:25:33). With my time of 1:27:47, I was right in the middle of those 2 times. I took it easy when I could (swim and transitions) and pushed harder in the bike (although it didn't show up here on my time) and run. I think it was a good strategy that I will have to try again. By the end of the race I felt like I could have pushed a little bit harder in some areas, but who knows how that would have effected the other parts. I think for being off for a while I could not have done much better. Wahoo! :) What limited your ability to perform faster: Being sick/injured the past several weeks. Event comments: J & A still continue to put on the best events EVER! I get spoiled with them and expect the same from other race organizers, but nothing has lived up to theirs yet. How do you beat ice cream, hamburgers, massages, beer, plenty of water and other drinks, all kinds of fruits...not to mention the events always run on time and there are more than enough volunteers all over the course to make sure the racers are safe and well hydrated! This is a great race and would recommend it to anyone. Thanks to all the volunteers and hard work to make this race a success! Last updated: 2008-12-29 12:00 AM

Got about 6hrs sleep and woke up at 445am and out the door by 5. My routine is to stop at Whataburger and get a breakfast sandwich and a DP to help wake me up. Filled up with water too along the way. Got to the site at 6am. Took my time setting everything up then (got a nice spot at the end of the rack) then went and hung out with my wife near the water.
Did some stretching and a few minutes of swimming.
