Swim
Comments: Okay swim. I think the bouys were crooked or my sighting was off. Over 4 minutes faster than my half iron swim last year but about 2 minutes slower than I wanted. Didn't feel too shagged coming out of the water. Had to swim thru the wake of a rescue boat that cut across the course going after someone. What would you do differently?: concentrate on finding someone to draft off of at the start. Transition 1
Comments: Long transition, I got lost & had to double back to my bike. I tend to have long T times, so I am happy with this. What would you do differently?: Pay better attention to where my bike was. Bike
Comments: 2:45 was my goal time. I thought that might be a dream when I first started out because my back was giving my fits. But I just kept riding and making my time checks. There was a flat section around mile 45, I think, that allowed me to get my second wind. Finished strong, giving me some confidence that I might have a good run. Had 2 bottles of endurance & 2 water with 5 accel gels. So nutrition was as planned. What would you do differently?: Trained more with hills. Transition 2
Comments: Excellent dismount, hit the ground running, down a little slope into transition. Found my shoes, really found the tree right next to my space on the rack, so no wasted time. What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: I ran 30 miles the month before this race because of a few injuries. My goal was 1:45 & I really thought I wasn't going to come close to it. I ran out of T2 and the crowds were outstanding. That really pumped me up, maybe too much (6:28 first mile!) I used that energy to take me as far as I could and it got me to the line in 1:40! HR was steady, only went up about 6 bpm at the end. I faded the last 2 miles, but I am really happy with the result. 2 gels on the run. Should have been 3. I think that contributed to the fade at the end. What would you do differently?: 3 gels. I should have had the confidence to push harder the last 2 miles. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, found Jacob, grabbed our gear and hit the road. Would have liked to stay, but I needed to be home for a commitment the next day. I didn't like the idea of having to use a ticket to get food and drink. I used my tickets for beer & I left my wallet in my wetsuit. Event comments: I left the race with a better opinion than when I arrived. I would do it again with an RV at the campground. That would be enjoyable. The crowds were great. Woke up, ate, grabbed a cup of coffee out of the hotel lobby and loaded up the van for the 20 minute drive to the race. I think it took about 45 minutes to finally get to the parking lot.
Went to T2 to set up, walked down to T1 to get the bike ready. As I was walking into T1, they were telling everyone that the transition was going to close in 3 minutes, yea right. What a goat rodeo. Didn't need a warm up because my pulse was elevated with the stress of getting ready in about 5 minutes.
