Swim
Comments: I was in the second wave of this wade start. The start went well with a small bit of bumping, if I bumped into you, sorry. The water temperature was not a factor for me during this race. The first lap went well; it was a bit weird to get out of the water and run on the beach to only get back in the water for the second lap. All through the second lap things went well, I swam until my hands hit the bottom and then I stood up and ran to the beach. As I ran to the transition area, I looked at my watch and was happy to see I was right at my target time (40 mins). At this point, I was happy, I had just finished the swim for my first HM and I was on target. What would you do differently?: Looking back at the swim now I realize I could have pushed my effort and as always I need to improve my sighting. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: This was a great 2 lap rolling course. The aid stations were well spaced and the volunteers did a great job. My target here was to maintain a 17.5 mile average and be ready for the run. I was able to maintain a comfortable cadence through out the bike and I felt pretty strong. I was able to get in my calories and take what the race was giving me. As I headed into transition I was feeling good knowing I had just finished the bike of my first half ironman. What would you do differently?: I will do more brick workouts prior to next half in November. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Here is where the wheels fell of the bus. I came out of transition feeling a little tight, but ok. I ran the first mile up hill towards the campground and knew that this would be a long run. It was about this time I noticed that it was getting warm and I realized I was going to catch heck from my wife for not putting on sunscreen. As I finished my first lap my wife and daughter were there yelling for me (nothing like family to improve how you feel). I was able to maintain 9 to 10 minute miles for the first 6.55 miles then I had run for 8 minutes and walk to 2. I was able to keep up that kind of rotation for the remainder of the run. This was the slowest I have ever run 13.1 miles, but I still felt a strong sense of accomplishment upon finishing the race. I can’t wait till November to see what improvements I can make. What would you do differently?: I will do more brick workouts prior to next half in November. Post race
Warm down: Walk around with my wife and daughter and had some pasta with 500 close friends. Event comments: Thanks to all the voluteers who braved first the cold and then the heat to aid the particpants during the race. And to the parents of the younger volunteers, you are doing a great job raising the generation that will be picking my nursing home. Thanks, John Last updated: 2008-12-30 12:00 AM

I got up after about 4 hours of broken sleep; I never sleep well before a race. I am like an excited little kid. I had breakfast and loaded my bike and gear into the truck for the hour drive to Lake Anna.
I have a very elaborate warm up routine, ok maybe not. I put on my wetsuit (thanks to the girl who offered to zip me up) and went down to the water to see how it felt and then went over the start.
