Pre-race routine:

4 days of severe gastrointestinal problems made my pre-race routine a matter of deciding whether to race or not. 1/2 a muffin and a cup of coffee later I decided that I didn't want to miss this one.
Event warmup:

Nice looong walk to the swim start.
Swim
  • 20m 59s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was really fun. I was worried about the ocean swim (as opposed to the murky lakes we usually splash around in..) but instead I was shocked to look up and there was the buoy. On my mind was also the 4 foot shark my father-in-law caught Friday afternoon and immediately released back into the water - perhaps it's parents were out there...
What would you do differently?:

Under better health circumstances I would have gone much much harder.
Transition 1
  • 01m 17s
Bike
  • 1h 23m 13s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.92 mile/hr
Comments:

What a fantastic route. Fast and pretty. The first time around was really great I held a 20 mph average but I started loosing it on the second go around.
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Run
  • 73m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Ok, so here is where my stomach cramps finally got me. First mile and a half were ok not much "jelly-leg" from the bike but I was VERY happy to see my cheering section at the 2,5 mile point - I know you all saw AND HEARD them - it was really great and gave me enough air for another mile. At about 4 miles I started walking - I was cooked - literally! The beach stretch to the finish was pure torture the sun was so hot and I never felt the ocean breeze I was promised!
Post race
Warm down:

eeehh does throwing up and laying down count?

What limited your ability to perform faster:

4 days of diarrhea really left me unable to do much of anything. I was completely de-hydrated afterwards. This was my first Olympic distance so I just had to do it and I was really happy that I got to do it at all. I will put this one in the book for the learning experience and I know I gave EVERYTHING I had and there is something to be said for that.

Event comments:

Fantastic race, we will definately be back. The volunteers were superb - they worked so hard. The GA Multisports races are truly the best.
