Pre-race routine:

Got up at 7, ate minin bagels with peanut butter, stretched, etc. Got to transition, set up my stuff, got body-marked, and my chip. Hung out at the Team Z tent.
Event warmup:

Not too much - got in the water to acclimate to the cold.
Swim
  • 16m 56s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

Starting off was a little rough trying to navigate people and dealing with race-start adrenaline rush in the freezing-a$$ cold water. I got used to it fairly quickly, but it takes your breath away. I also am not a huge fan of swimming in a wetsuit. After a bit, I got into a decent groove and was passing people. Tried to find folks to draft off, but was unsuccessful. Didn't do a super job of sighting, so I probably swam a bit extra.
What would you do differently?:

Started closer to the front - it was looking crowded up front, so I stayed back. But then I always have to fight through people. Sigh...next time I'll just have the balls to do it. I'm faster in the pool - swam a 14:something the other night at practice.
Transition 1
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

When I got out of the water, I felt fine. But then when I stopped at my transition spot, I felt dizzy, a little nauseous and pretty shaky. So getting my wetsuit off and shoes on was slow-going. Ick. My transitions are usually a lot better. I think the cold water affected me - never had problems like that before.
What would you do differently?:

Um, NOT swim in 62 degree water?!?!
Bike
  • 49m 19s
  • 12 miles
  • 14.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Decent bike for awhile. I kept a good speed for a lot of it - pushed it a bit on the easier downhills, in the big ring. Definitely hit 20+ mph on many sections. But any sort of incline beats the crap out of me, and after awhile, they just got to me. And then there were two steeper descents that curved around and I couldn't see where they went, which slowed me way, way down. So after that, I was just thrown. The whole course took me at least 5 minutes longer than it should have.
What would you do differently?:

Get stronger...not sure how...riding doesn't seem to do it. I spent the winter on the trainer and have nothing to show for it. And going down hills more just makes me more afraid of them.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Did all right with this transition. I don't like Yankz. I don't like the old speedlaces I bought. I can never get my feet into my shoes as fast as I would like - I need to find something else.
What would you do differently?:

meh.
Run
  • 30m 8s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Sh*tty run, for me. It was hot out at that point, and there was no shade. My legs just never got moving. The long rollers sucked. Tried to make up as much time on the downhills as I could. But definitely did not run anywhere NEAR as well as I should have. I managed to pull a strong finish down the hill and into the finish chute - lots of Team Z'ers cheering me on.
What would you do differently?:

Dunno - just keep getting stronger. Run more hills - we don't run that many hills in team practice, since Ballston isn't terribly hilly, and our long runs are usually flat.
Post race
Warm down:

Got water and stuck my legs in the lake. Got a piece of pizza cuz I needed the salt. Then got beer and food from the tent. Chatted with some teammates - cheered a few in to the finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Dunno - sucky bike skills still.

Event comments:

Crappy run course - they need to change it back to the flat part. The trail run through the woods and the 2 ditches you had to cross, not to mention the section through the parking lot were unacceptable.
Crappy way to start the season, for me. Not sure what happened, but I just fell apart. The only consolation is that the first time I did this course, it took me longer to finish AND the run that time was easier. So I did do "better", though I would have liked to have done about 10 minutes better than I did today.
I did enjoy the crowd support from Team Z, though - was fun to see everyone out on the course (even if they all passed me on the bike), cheering at T1/T2, and at the end as I was coming in.

Course: Out and back, long rollers. The first 200 yards were through the woods, with really uneven terrain, roots and clods of dirt and grass - part of it was through a dusty parking lot. Really sh*tty run course. I like the old one better - it was pancake flat and all on the road.
