Swim
Comments: Thanksfully the water was warm and felt good. The sun was at a point though that the reflection blinded us when we were swimming, I couldn't see the bouys and that of course made sighting nearly impossible. I knew were I was going though, so just followed shore. My goggles got fogged, I had to take them off at one point, I lost a contact. Of course there was the normal accidental kicking, hitting. We were swimming gaainst the waves. What would you do differently?: get better googles, especially ones with mirrored lenses. Get my own wetsuit for next time, the rental one I used had a hole in the arm and took on quite a bit of water I think. More open water practice swims, as this was really only my second real distance swim in open water. Practice practice practice. In January I couldn't even go a full length of the pool. Now that I have the distance, I need to work on effeciency and speed. Transition 1
Comments: had to run .3 of mile from the beach, around the resort and into the parking lot to transition. Took the wetsuit off when I hit the pavement, was sill a little dizzy from swimming so I fumbled with it a little bit, finally got it off and ran with it up the hill. Sliced my foot on something and got two big scratches and a gauge of skin taken out of the bottom. It hurt, but I didn't look at the damage until after the race. :) What would you do differently?: not step on something sharp, maybe try not to wear socks? with the cuts I'm glad I didn't try to go int he shoes barefoot. Bike
Comments: I rocked the bike, Think I came in about 39th OVERALL in bike split. Knew I had to do well if I wanted a chance at doing okay overall to make up for my slow swim/run times. I knew the course, and knew I was strong on it. As I was leaving transition I heard them speak my name over the loadspeaker and say "Congratulations to andigurl, bib number 561. She' 29, and has lost over 95 pounds and this is her first triathlon." I waa like "That's ME That's ME!" haha. I took off like a bat outta hell. I was passed by only about 3-4 women, all of them in the 35-45 yo range that kick everyone's asses! :) What would you do differently?: Nothing. I'm very proud of my performance on this leg. When I racked back up before the run there were so few bikes int he parking lot I was like "YES!!!" Becuase I knew a bunch of those skinny girls would catch me on the run! =) Transition 2
Comments: took a little longer than I would have likes. What would you do differently?: put the shoes on FIRST instead of last. I could have put the race belt and visor on as I was running out of transition instead of before I put on my shoes. Run
Comments: I knew I was goingt o have the hardest time with the run. The hills were steep, so I walked them, and I ran the flats and the downhills. I saw more then a handful of girls fall down on the rocks. A few of the hills were so steep it's amazing everyone made it up them. Running up was pointless, as the rocks just gave way under my feet. :) What would you do differently?: More training outside, and for this particular race, more training on dirt trails outside. I've worked myself from not being able to run 1/4 mile to runnign about 5, but most of my training has been on a treadmill. I'll definitely move it outside more now. Training is key. hopefully the next race won't have the hills and I can run th whole thing. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: As I continue to lose weight and get lighter, I'm sure I'll get faster and faster. Event comments: I thought everything was very well organized, I didn't have any problems and would like to congratulate the organizers on a job well done. I really thought it was a great all round experience. being an all womens event it definitely had a different vibe then that of a normal tri, I think. It was a great way to break into triathlons and I look forward to doing many more in the up coming months and years. The course was tough, but given the terrain around the venue, I think any route they chose would have been very difficult, it's a mountainous area and you can't change the topography of the site. :) Last updated: 2009-01-07 12:00 AM
