Swim
Comments: My OWS really sucks at this point. Not so much the stoke, just the lack of experience. I went out a bit hard, but the pace was manageable. I just couldn't breath in the wetsuit, half breaths at best. I quickly ran out of air and then slipped to near panic and got a bit depressed. Breast stoke, side stroke, back stoke, and a little freestyle. First lap 18:30. Second lap I stood up and walked at the turn around for a few seconds and got my self under control. Second lap was all freestyle except a few breast stokes to sight. Felt much better and under control. Second lap: 15:00 Not to bad for my first OWS, I survived. What would you do differently?: 1. More time swimming in a wetsuit. 2. More time OWS. 3. Drop weight so the damn wetsuit doesn't constrict me so bad. Transition 1
Comments: Long run up to T1. The water level is way down. About 1/4 mile from the water to T1. Heart rate was way out of control from trying to run up and from the swim. Wetsuit off no problem and everything on smoothly. Had a GU gel and some water and was off. What would you do differently?: Practice to help speed it up. Never did get a practice transition in. Get some Tri specific bike shoes to speed things up. Calm down and get the HR under control to start the bike. Bike
Comments: Fun course, even the hill was fun. Nice going flat and fast, averaged about 20mph. Down hills were fun, max out speed at 40mph. Uphill got down to about 6mph. Heart rate was way to high, but I was not saving anything for the run since I wasn't sure I would finish it. First hard ride in new position. What would you do differently?: I will not change position a week before a race, but this was my first Triathlon and it was not my 'A' race. Eat more on the bike and drink less closer to T2. Try not to treat it as a TT and keep the HR down a bit. Transition 2
Comments: Not bad, especially for not having practiced it at all. Dismounted, ran in, racked and got run gear on fine. Grabbed a few gels and had a splash of water. What would you do differently?: Practice transitions. Get Triathlon specific shoes, both bike and running. Sockless is the way to go for these. Run
Comments: I did better than I thought. My IT band issues have had me not running and sometimes barely walking. Used my IT stap, not sure it did anything though. Felt like I was running real slow and hardly working. I walked all of the ups and downs to help save the IT band some. Got through it and felt like I could have gone faster and further, except for the IT band. What would you do differently?: Not be injured 10 days before a race. Take in more calories in the early run. Post race
Warm down: Limped around a bit, the IT band didn't start hurting until after I finished. Recovery drink of a nice cold Stone IPA, don't tell. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of OWS practice. New position on the bike. IT band injury. Racing the first week out of base. Event comments: Good race. Well organized. Would like more than water at the aid stations. Will do again next year and also will do the fall race in November. Last updated: 2009-01-13 12:00 AM

Woke up at around 4:14am and got everything packed into the truck. Had breakfast and helped get the kids ready for the day. Left home about 4:50am and arrived at transition by 5:20am. Nice to have a race close to home.
Breakfast: Oatmeal and gatorade.
A little bit of stretching.
