Pre-race routine:

Up @ 3; made smoothie & coffee; bathroom; threw stuff in car. Left the house by 4:15 which got us to the gate @ 5:05 - perfect. Couple more bathroom stops so I wouldn't have to pee in my wetsuit.
Event warmup:

Jogged a bit w/ rmarzano then did some hill repeats to get the lungs going. Looked for adabug and andriall but didn't see them :( Ran into dickdime and markdills and Michelle. Poor Mark looked gimpy after running 34 miles last night!

Comments:

Really thought my swim was faster than this because I looked at my watch at some point and thought I did it in 43' - jogged pretty well to the mat at transition so don't know where the discrepancy is. Sky was overcast at start so I should have been able to stay on course better than I did -- kept going right. Started in front and to the right so I should have cut left to draft. Between the waves and the fumes from the rescue boats I'm surprised I didn't get seasick. Could've sworn a rip tide was pulling me away from shore on the last leg.
What would you do differently?:

Bilateral breathe since apparently the side I breathe to doesn't pull as hard.
Transition 1

Comments:

I was last of my rackmates to get to T1 and my bike was on the ground. I had very carefully set it up so it wasn't touching anyone's bike -- spectator said it fell over by itself -- yeah, after someone bumped it and took off. So I had to take the time to pick up my aerobottle sponge which was on the wrong side of the fallen bike but that was the worst of it. Glad it didn't mess up the derailleur cuz I don't know how to adjust it.
What would you do differently?:

Worry less about the fallen bike and just get on with it.

Comments:

Quads were tired from the moment I mounted the bike. Don't know what's w/ that -- Mark says nutrition was off. Never was breathing heavy like in my last HIM which made me think I wasn't working hard enough, but the legs couldn't do more.
What would you do differently?:

Shift to a lower gear and spin more in spite of the fact that I thought my legs should be spinning at the current gear.
Transition 2
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

Couldn't get running shoes on easily in spite of body gliding before race. Didn't win T2 this time :(
What would you do differently?:

Use Aquaphor next time?

Comments:

Really really really did not want to do this run. Kept to the plan of walking 60" every aid station which were about 1.5 miles apart until the last few when I shortened the walk time and skipped it altogether on the last one. Worked great! I got plenty of liquids and ice that I tossed down my top and water for my head. First race I've tried this and first time to not dehydrate on the run and first time to negative split I think -- no garmin so can't be sure. Started the run passing a woman in my AG and we went back and forth all race til I passed her the last mile -- she wasn't taking walking breaks and def slowed toward the end. Run time is just over 10% slower then my 1/2 mary PR, so I think that's right on track for a tri run.

Muscles right above my knees cramped for the first couple miles, then ankles got pissed off around mile 5, stomach and intestines took turns whining also, but since none of them could be sure we had a real problem I ignored them all.
What would you do differently?:

Build my run as planned -- hadn't run longer than 6.2 miles since May!
Post race
Warm down:

Gimped thru the food line and just sprawled on the ground when I could bend my knees enough. Just laid there for a while and finally started eating watermelon, banana, working my way to real food. After they gave out awards I was finally ready for the beer and pizza. Everything hurt!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough run training. Think I overdid it the weekend before w/ riding the course and racing a 10k.

Event comments:

This was the worst I've finished in standings in any race I've ever done -- tough tough competition!!! So glad I did the series since Ironman bought it and Barry and Jodee won't be running it next year. I like this race best of the series because people tend to stay longer afterwards. Great hanging w/ Michelle and Mark and Richard in the beer tent. Great beer and pizza! Great schwag and I won some Tyr Nest Pro goggles I've been wanting.
