Pre-race routine:

Had a bagel with peanut butter and plenty of water. Made sure to wear more clothes then necessary. Hate to be cold.
Event warmup:

short 10 minute run around moody gardens. I wasn't planning on racing too hard today since I have the half ironman tomorrow.
Swim
  • 09m 9s
  • 528 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was a good swim considering I have not been in the pool at all during my training. My heart rate was way too high though. I think it spikes as I start to run in the water to get to transition. I need to watch that. I hate starting the bike with my heart rate in the 170's.

I knew I was early but I didn't realize I had come out of the water 3rd. I thought I was fifth so I was chasing some imaginary riders on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I imagine like anything else, I would swim better if I practiced. However, its not the part of my game I need to work on right now.
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

I had the 2nd spot on the first rack next to the bike entry and exit. It was the best spot in transition. Which means I have no excuse for the bad t times.
What would you do differently?:

Hurry.
Bike

Comments:

I passed the guy in 2nd pretty quick and then tried to find what I thought were the 2 guys in front of me. There was of course only 1 and he was cruising. Being a swimmer I usually have a stream of humming disk wheels blowing past me. I believe there were only 2 this time. One of them was the overall winner. He blew past me but looked back to tell me I was doing a good job. I was doing 23 at the time so he had to be in the 27 to 28 range. I thought what a nice guy he was for doing that, it turns out he's the coach for the Texas Iron (I think that's the name). They had a lot of people out today and they placed well. The other guy that passed me was in my age group which put me back in 3rd again. I usually don't catch anyone on the run so I was just going to try to hold on to 3rd at that point.

I still have that wreck from 3 weeks ago in my head. I'm not confident cornering or taking any of the turns at high speed. It really slowed me down through the first 1.5 and last 1.5 miles of this race. With such a short bike it really took my average down a lot.
What would you do differently?:

Work on cornering. It just a confidence thing at this point.
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Since I didn't have to go far I just unclipped rather then pull my shoes out. I need to work on this transition.
Run
  • 23m 16s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm still not a runner, but I saw the guy in my age group that passed my on the bike and I thought i could catch him. I tried to stay smooth through the first mile then build into the 2nd and bring it home with whatever I had left. I moved into 2nd just before the 1 mile mark. I still need to run better off the bike, but it was fun to actually run someone down. I don't do that very often. With all the out and backs on this short course you could see who was behind you and how far. I realized with about a mile left that there wasn't anyone pushing me and I wasn't catching the guys in front of me so I didn't really have any motivation to run hard. Plus I had to save a little for the half iron tomorrow.
What would you do differently?:

Be a better runner?
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for a little while. Since I was about the 5th person in I was able to get a massage without much of a wait.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Well I had the half ironman tomorrow, so I didn't want to spend it all today. I was still disappointed in my bike split. 21.2 mph average on this course is horrid. I had the same average for 56 miles the next day. Course might have been long (I say that every time I don't like my split).

Event comments:

This is a really well organized event. The volunteers seem to line the course locking arms to make sure you don't take a wrong turn. The loopy run course was a little weird at first, but I actually liked it because it allowed you to see behind you better so you could see who was chasing you and how far behind you where.
