Swim
Comments: I thought I had agreat swim until I saw my watch at the end. Started strong, navigated well. It was very choppy and for the first 400m or so, I was turning into the waves, I had to stop 3 times after inhaling a wave and choking. After that first turn, I felt really good, navigated great, and was feeling very good coming in the last few yards, thinking I had gone bit faster than the last 2 years. I was right at a minute slower. I am sure the chop had something to do with it, but my pool times this year have been consistently faster than other years, so, even though I fetl really good in the water, I was disappointed with the results. What would you do differently?: push harder. Transition 1
Comments: I couldn't get my suit off, that was the only problem. What would you do differently?: nothing Bike
Comments: tough bike. The wind was nonstop and it flet like we were going into it or across it for at least 20miles. I can really only think of 2 shorts stretches where it was behind us. THe last 10 miles were dead into it, too, which really sucked. I wanted to try and not kill myself on the bike and save a little for the run. I definitely did that, but looking at it now, I definitely should have pushed harder. My legs never really hurt. I think my pace was very appropriate for a half ironman, but it should have been faster for the shorter race. What would you do differently?: push it more Transition 2
Comments: good T2, no issues What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: the run went very well. I wanted to break 45min for the 10k. My goal was to go out in 7:30 and then pick it up. My first mile was 7:20 and felt good, then somehow, the next 4 miles were all sub7:10 and they felt easy. Mile 5 was a little slower, but I still felt really good. The last mile I felt very steady and didnt' feel like I was slowing down, but the split time was 8:20. I don;t think it was measured correctly, there was no way that I slowed down that much without realizing it. I still felt very good at the end. At the 5 mile mark, I thought I had about 10 minutes to break 45, and I felt so good , I thought Iwas keeping the same 7:20 or so pace. I was most disappointed when I saw my last mile time. I thoght miles 2-5 seemed a bit short, but mile 6 was a bit long. Overall, thgough, a good run. What would you do differently?: push it harder, not just cruise in becasue I thought I was going to beat my goal run time. I left some time out there for no reason. Post race
Warm down: walked around and ate a lot of junk food What limited your ability to perform faster: wind. The bike was tough, and the swim was no real picnic. The cooler temps on the run were nice, though. Event comments: As always, this was a great race, very well organized. I like the fact that organizers listened to the racers and did the starting order for age groups by lottery. It was also cool to get to watch the pros, because I was done by the time they started.
