Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:00 (which was 4:00am to my body because of the time change)Bagel with PB and banana. The breakfast of champions. Out of the hotel by 5:30 and at the course by 6ish. Unloaded the bike and gear bag. Checked the tires and then headed over to transition. I had a great transition spot near the bike exit. Once transiton was set up I left to get marked and hang out with my husband. We watched the start of the sprint race and around 7:30 I went back to transition to get my wetsuit and body glide. There was a girl who had arrived late and was trying to squeeze in at the end of the rack when there was plenty of room near the fence. She started moving other bikes and didn't realize that she was splitting up bikes with their transition gear. Another girl and I pointed out the open spot at the end and she resigned to set up there. She was a little miffed but seemed to get over it quickly. Put my wetsuit on and headed for the start.
Event warmup:

Took a dip in the water. It was chilly. Swam out a back a couple of times to get comfy. Hopped around to keep the blood flowing. Got some last minute advice from my coach.

Shuffled over to the start of the swim, ended up seeding myself just right on the right and up front. Horn went off and I took off attempting to sight just right of the sun. It was really bright and hard to see much of anything for the first 750yards. I ended up hitting the first bouy dead on, rounded it and caught a draft off a girl for 300 yards or so. Sighted the last bouy perfectly made the last turn and headed into shore.
What would you do differently?:

T1 went really fast. I couldn't feel my feet so I didn't bother toweling off. It was my fastest T1 yet. 11/34 women in my age group

Got on the bike and pushed it. I made a point to keep the heart rate down but not too low. I wanted to race a notch above my upcoming HIM and hit it dead on. I was passed by a few girls but not too many. Watched the super fast 40+ ladies fly by. I raced my own race. I watched a few packs of people fly by ... umm no drafting people. On the second loop another racer and I nearly were taken out by a rogue car on the course. The CHP officer was yelling at the car to stop. Freaked us both out, we chuckled about it afterwards.
What would you do differently?:

Chuck my old water bottled filled with Gatorade and take one of the nice new ones they were handing out at the bottle exchange.

T2 was awesome. Ranked 3/34 in my age group and 7th out of all the women. Couldn't feel my feet and felt like I was running on sticks again. I was in and out really fast. I've got T2 down pretty good.

I started out and my HR was through the roof. I took a couple of deep breaths and was able to settle in and get it down before I hit the first mile. Completed the first lap and was passed and passed people equally. Came around to start lap two and we were running in sand (yeah ... quad burner). I could feel my left food by mile three but the right foot was still numb but I could feel pain. By the last mile I was ready to be finished. I contemplated taking my shoes off and running barefoot my foot hurt that much. I crossed the finish line, got my medal and had my chip removed. My shoes came off immediatly. Ouch! My right foot hurt a lot. I sat down and saw that I had a rock lodged in my foot, I'm guessing it settled there during T1 in the run over gravel to my bike. I'm really glad I couldn't feel my feet for most of the race because it hurt ... big time. I'm please that I raced sub 8:30/min miles ... I'm getting faster. I did the sprint last year and all of my times (swim, bike and run) were faster and I was doing the International distance.
What would you do differently?:

Not get a rock lodged in my foot .. enough said.

General fitness. I know I can get faster. I figure another 5-10 pounds off my frame would help.

Event comments:

This is a fantastic race, brought out lots of really fast people this year. The price is right and it's a great flat and fast course.
