Overall Rank = 594/744

Age Group Rank = 106/120
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 a.m. Had a banana and a power bar for breakfast, with some Gatorade.
Event warmup:

Got to the area, set up transition, did some light stretching.

I did get into the water and swim a little to warm-up.
Swim
  • 22m 7s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had trouble getting my rhythm in the freestyle stronk because of the crowds. This caused me to have trouble breathing, which made me swim on my back every so often to catch my breath.

When I was able to get a good freestyle stroke going, I felt pretty good.

Everyone else must have done poorly also because this was the leg where I placed the best in the field.
What would you do differently?:

Need more practice swimming to develop confidence.
Transition 1
  • 05m 59s
Comments:

Transition was very slow. For starters, I had to catch my breath. Then I had trouble getting out of my suit. The transition area was a wet, grassy field, so there was not much of a chance to run with the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I could speed things up a bit.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 2s
  • 17 miles
  • 16.99 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a PR on the course, so I was pleased with the ride. I have been riding this course all spring so I know it well. That really helped.

I felt like my nutrition and drinking gatorade were fine.
What would you do differently?:

If I had more time to train, I would have done the course faster. Other than that, not much too complain about.
Transition 2
  • 06m 13s
Comments:

Transition was slow. There was no real way to jump off the bike and run with it, given the st up. I had trouble racking the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Do transition faster.
Run
  • 45m 45s
  • 5 miles
  • 09m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt good. I started out at an easy pace. No problme with most of the hills, except mile 3, where I had to walk a bit. Finished with a good sprint. I felt like my pace was pretty good. It was faster than I thought it would be.
What would you do differently?:

Run the course ahead of time.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with wife. Had some water. Met with people from my Tri Club.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

If I trained more, I am sure I would have been faster.

Event comments:

Great race. Had alot of fun. Looking forward to doing it next year.

Course: The course is a little hilly, but not too bad. The worst hills are at mile 14 to 15, with two big hils right after each other. Traffic was well managed by the race organizers, so some of the tricky lights were not a problem. the road surface varied -- some roads were smooth and some had potholes.
