Swim
Comments: M and W 30-34 start together. I feel like I hate the swim. But really I don't hate the swim, I just hate that I stink at it so badly. Gun went off and I tentatively went forward. Shortly right goggle started leaking. A few more strokes, can I live with this? Um, nope - not only can't see but have contacts in. Stop, fix goggles. Continue. When am I going to reach that first buoy? People all over the place. Seriously, I thought there would be more fast swimmers but it seemed like everyone was still there. I am not swimming yet, I'm doing some weird half stroke, look up every other stroke. Thankfully I'm calm and not freaking out. At least I have that. Somehow I swallowed a mouthful of water and so I had to flip and try and burp or vomit, I could hardly breathe. Make the first turn and think 'at least it's mostly a straight shot from here.' Then the girl next to me proceeds to backstroke and freestyle in across in front of me at least three times. She gives me a limp 'sorry'. I finally pass her. Finally swimming at least some. Make the turn for the end and think yes! Pass one guy on the boat ramp. What would you do differently?: I just need OWS experience. I can't think about my stroke because I'm too busy being uncomfortable and forgetting to race. I probably swam all of five minutes and spent the rest of the time doing who knows what. But I survived and that's a start. Transition 1
Comments: Ran in, socks on, shoes on, helmet/glasses, race belt and go. Just about as good as I could have expected. Bike
Comments: Bike leg was about as good as I could have expected. Only issue I had was that the day before I started having issues getting in my big chain ring so I stayed in the mid ring the whole course. Still, this is about the best I can do right now. Pleased with this performance. What would you do differently?: I know I'm supposed to get fired up when I get passed but I really find those fast people on fast bikes pretty cool when they go by. ;) Transition 2
Comments: I thought this was pretty good. Couldn't ask for more when haven't learned the getting out of shoes thing yet. Did drop one of my running shoes and thought for a split second how I really didn't want to bend over and pick it back up. What would you do differently?: Get better, able to run faster. Run
Comments: Just wanted to make it steady and a good pace for me. I just focused on myself and doing the best I could. Knee gave me no problems. Yelled for everyone I saw on the course. It was so fun to have my family there cheering for me at the end. Was so glad to cross that finish line. What would you do differently?: Just gotta keep losing weight and keep running. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and chatted with my team, and all the family that came out for the first time to see my race. It was so great to see so many people. Then my friend came by and said they thought I was third Athena. Sure enough, I got my first little triathlon trophy. Thank goodness they told me because I would not have gone over to awards area if they had not told me. How funny is it to explain to people I was like 200th and got a 3rd place award? What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall I was very happy with this performance. 4 out of my 5 times were my 'best-case' scenarios. The swim was the only poor time. Just glad to be in an event. Great day. Event comments: Loved this race. Short and sweet but just what I needed. So glad to see everyone on the team do so well and some finish their first event ever. I thought it was well-organized and started right on time. Last updated: 2009-02-04 12:00 AM

Got up at 4am, tried to choke down some oatmeal. First race in two years, I was so nervous I could barely eat. Figured it wasn't too big a deal since it's a short race. Packed up bike and off we went. Arrived at 5:30am, perfect timing to get setup, chip, talk to everyone there and not feel too rushed.
Walk around and talk to friends. Lake looked good, thankfully not choppy and the course didn't look too long.
