Pre-race routine:

Was in a late heat, so didn't really start getting ready until after lunch. Had a pile of pasta and a banana. Then packed everything up and drove to campus.

Checked in, then looked around to familiarize ourselves (my wife Sarahontheleft raced with me) with the layout of things. Changed into running clothes since there was about 45 minutes before our heat started so I wouldn't be walking around in my jammers. Spent a few minutes on the bike set up in the pool area to figure out how it worked, and ran a minute or two on the treadmill in order to do the same. Didn't know that we actually would run on a different kind of treadmill.

Changed into swim things, got ready, and had an energy gel.
Event warmup:

Ran three minutes on the warm-up treadmill and stretched. When we could get in the pool, I swam about 75 yards. Then it was time to go.

Since there's no field for total distance for this kind of race, my total distance for the race was 15.172 miles

Comments:

Started out quite fast. I was surprised to see that I finished my first 100 in about 1:13. I eased back and fell into a good pace. I decided before the race even started that I wasn't going to do flip-turns. When I do them, they eat up so much energy. I did the grab the edge, pull-in, sink, push off method instead and was able to keep pace with the fast woman next to me doing that.

I stopped for a couple seconds a few times to grab a quick drink from my water bottle and to catch my breath. I'm glad I did that. I think the time lost with those few little rests were made up by not exhausting myself.

When I looked at the clock, I saw I was doing 1:30 100s pretty consistently. It was faster than I anticipated I was going to go, but it didn't feel too hard. I could tell I was pushing, but it was just the right amount, I think. I picked up pace a fair amount (a little under 1:20/100s) for the last three minutes and finished pretty strong.
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing, except perhaps practice flip-turns so I can do them efficiently.
Transition 1
  • 10m
Comments:

Fixed ten minute transition.

Dried off in the locker room. Grabbed my gear and went upstairs to the bikes. Stretched a little bit, then got on the bike to loosen up.

Comments:

I was concerned about this leg after reading others' race reports. So I set what seemed like a relatively high resistance (~10) and went with that. I varied the resistance up and down as I felt I needed. 15 minutes through the race, one of the volunteers asked all of us if we needed anything. I said a breeze, and they nicely turned a fan towards me. That helped.

I surged and relaxed as I needed, pushing the resistance up to 12 and 15 for a while now and then, but I think I kept it between 8 and 10 for the most part. The machine was saying I was doing about 20+ mph. Thinking back to the race reports, that seemed good, so I tried to keep it there.

I pushed the last few minutes and was working pretty hard despite concerns that I may be hurting myself for the run. It was a good strong finish though.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. bring my own saddle, perhaps. Those big squishy ones stunk.
Transition 2
  • 10m
Comments:

10 minute fixed transition.

Staggered to the men's bathroom and changed into running shorts, applied body glide, and had another energy gel.

Made my way to the treadmills and stretched for a couple minutes before the treadmill was free for me to get on. I am very happy for that time to stretch and for the couple minutes to start walking and then jogging on the treadmill before we had to start running. That made the beginning of the run so much easier than it would have been if we had to start immediately after the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little less during the transition.

Comments:

The run was fine. My pace wasn't terribly fast, but it was good. I pushed as fast as about 7:30/mile and relaxed back to about 8:30/mile as I needed and was able. Kicked up the pace the last three minutes a bit, but I was getting pretty worn out and my brain was starting to turn off. Had the run been much longer, I would have slowed down considerably before too long.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Speed work in training perhaps.
Post race
Warm down:

Stagger about and did some mental math about my overall performance and was very happy with that. Gave my wife a big kiss for finishing her first triathlon. Eventually made our way over to the food and sat for a little while before stretching and taking a shower.

Post race burger/sweet potato fries and a beer at Highland Grill. Yum.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was hot in there. More fans would have been really nice.

Event comments:

Ten minute transitions were just right. Long enough to stretch and change, but not so long as to let you relax. If there was anything I'd change, it was the temperature inside or the lack of fans. I was pretty sweaty and some air flow would have been nice.

I'm definitely going to do this race again, though. It was a great time
