Swim
Comments: I was pleased with my swim. My distance was exactly what I thought it would be for the event. My first lap was 55 seconds (see "nervous energy" above) and then I settled into a pace of 70-75 seconds per lap. I took two short breaks for some gatorade. It helped to have my husband in the next lane. What would you do differently?: Learn to swim freestyle (I was breaststroking the whole way). Transition 1
Comments: Went into the locker room to change. All transitions were fixed at 10 minutes. I'm glad I started my stopwatch when the swim ended because I got upstairs to the bike with not much time to spare. What would you do differently?: find my own bike shorts so I didn't have to struggle to put on my husband's tri shorts, which are a bit tighter around the legs than mine Bike
Comments: This was the only leg that was a big question mark for me. I use a trainer in the winter that is not calibrated so I have no idea how fast I can really go. And by use, I mean ride 30 minutes once every two months ;) Fortunately, this went really well and I was able to push myself. I kept my resistance between 8-10 and my speed at least over 16 mph. It was so hot, though, and halfway through, my fan got shifted (from me to my husband -- thanks, Aaron) so I wasn't getting any air. When our 30 minutes was up, I headed outside to cool off. I had been warned about the heat and the fans were certainly nice, but I could tell that I was getting pretty overheated. What would you do differently?: Ummm... train more? Transition 2
Comments: 10 minutes again. I was going to change into running shorts but I decided to just stick with the tri shorts. As I mentioned above, I headed outside to try to cool off for a bit. I also stretched, ate a GU, and then hopped on the treadmill to get familiar with it. Run
Comments: My stomach felt a little queasy and crampy for the first half of the run. I'm usually capable of 9:30-10 minute miles under non-triathlon conditions, so that was what I was shooting for. I started running intervals in the second half of the run just to try to make the time pass more quickly. It was hot, I was worried about pushing too hard and getting sick, and my calves were starting to cramp. But I (almost) got 3 miles in, which made me pretty happy. What would you do differently?: stretch a bit more before running; I probably could have pushed myself a bit more but I really really really did not want to get sick Post race
Warm down: Stretched and tried to cool down. Talked with some of the other participants and headed over to the free food/water/swag area. Checked out the posted results for all the previous heats. My total distance was 12.032 miles. Going into the race, I was just hoping for 10 miles. What limited your ability to perform faster: I'm not really sure I could have gone much faster, without putting in a significant amount of training effort. Event comments: I thought this was a great event. It seemed really well organized and there were lots of helpful volunteers. We got a nice down vest in our race bag (a good change from a T-shirt). My only complaint would be about the heat, but I knew that ahead of time and I'm not sure they could have had any more fans going (although at least ONE by the treadmills would have been nice). A great experience for my first triathlon. Now my husband is trying to convince me to do an outdoor one :) Last updated: 2009-02-08 12:00 AM

Our heat started at 3 pm. I ate a big bowl of pasta at 1 and then attempted to gather everything I needed for the race. I was a little panicked when I couldn't find my bike shorts so I ended up borrowing my husband's tri shorts and that worked just fine. We arrived about an hour before the race, checked in, and got marked. The race is 30 minutes per event, and 10 people per heat. We were in one of the later heats so we had a chance to watch some of the other participants and cheer them on.
Tested out the bike and treadmill. Sat by the pool and watched the previous heat. Ate a GU 15 minutes before our heat was supposed to start. Since this was my first triathlon ever, I had plenty of nervous energy to deal with.
