Swim
Comments: Terrible swim. I was elbowed right off the bat, knocking my goggles and I'm right away on my back adjusting them. I can't get the right goggle tight and it continues to leak throughout the swim. Three times I had to roll on my back to empty and adjust - costing me time. Very frusturating swim. What would you do differently?: Need better goggles! Transition 1
Bike
Comments: This was a 4-loop closed biking course. It makes for an awesome ride because you have the whole road to choose your line for corners. To date, it's the best bike course I've raced. My feet were chilly and I was busting it pretty good. After the first lap it's hard to figure out who your passing and who is already behind you and just a lap or two behind. I had a nutrition plan to have a couple gels - one at half way and one just before T2. I think this worked well. There's one big climb for each lap and it's fun passing all those people huffing and puffing up the hill. What would you do differently?: My bike fitness needs to improve. I'd like to be able to get my bike leg to at least a sub 1:05 for next season. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Again, I come out flying. I have people to pass! My toes were FREEZING for the first couple of clicks. The course is a 2-looper, with a section that climbs and then descends. I was feeling very strong in the run and was pushing it hard. Again though, it was hard to figure out where I was in the race with so many people on the run course. On my second lap I got chicked! Damn, that's a first. The women started 5 minutes behind my wave so she's made up that 5 minutes and now passed me. Her cadence is unbelievable and I try to hang on with her...but it's not happening. I find out later she was the overall women's winner. Coming into the finish I see the clock and it's approaching 2:20...ugh...failure. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Going into this race I thought I might be able to get a Personal Best out of it. PB = 2:18:12 at Chinook Winds earlier this season. The bike course was short, plus my running has never been better. I thought I might have been able to get a sub 2:15 even...just didn't happen though. I think there were a few reasons. First, the damn swim was bad. I probably lost 90 seconds or more because of goggle issues. Second, my form was poor from alcohol intake in the days leading up to the race - it's like I sabotaged myself there. Third, while the bike leg was shorter, the climb I had to do 4 times kind of makes for a slower time. My bike fitness also needs to improve. Event comments: I have to give this race a 5'er. The ocean swim, closed course bike leg and run couse through Stanley Park...it doesn't get much better. Last updated: 2009-02-11 12:00 AM

I went into Vancouver the Friday before the race and hung out with a friend, Karl, who is also doing the race. Most of the time was spent relaxing. Had several beers and didn't work out except for a swim on the Sunday. The weather was cool and it rained off and on. Sucked, kinda. I was well rested going in to the race, but perhaps not in best form.
Up at 5am and ate Oatmeal and Banana for breakfast. Tried to eat a ham-egg sandwich on sour dough...it was so good, but I could only have a couple bites. I didn't want to overeat with just a hour and half to the race start.
Getting there was frantic. We were running late. Into transition Karl leaves to go to the washroom. I get my transition setup, my wetsuit on and then go for a good warm up in the ocean. After a bit I come back and Karl is back, getting his wetsuit on but his transition isn't set up. He's struggling to get his suit on and then I spot the zipper in the front...dumbass puts the thing on backwards! RD comes on the horn...5 minutes to race time, get to the beach! I wish Karl well, but I leave him. I'm not missing the start and I want to get near the front.
