Swim
Comments: Where to begin, very shallow entry and return. If needed about half could be jogged. I tried a dolphin kick and about hyperventilated it was so cold. I tried to relax and just do my drills to start with but every time I put my face in the water I felt like someone punched me in the face with and ice block. This was my first OWS, a combination of temperature and my overall comfort ability in the water did the trick. I ended up back stroking side stroking the whole course I never could put my face in the water. What would you do differently?: I thought I was good enough swimmer to get by, obviously not ;) I need to work more on OWS and just swimming in general. I've taught myself to swim the past year but need more work lol, all I can say is I did get through it Transition 1
Comments: it was cold and windy had to wear more clothes then i'd like to, putting them on wet was challenging. What would you do differently?: two towels, one to dry off and one to stand on Bike
Comments: I felt good on the bike, I couldn't shift into my high gears at first which scared me, was afraid of it being a very long race but finally played around long enough for it to switch. What would you do differently?: An actual road bike instead of a mountain bike with slicks would be a nice purchase. Transition 2
Comments: I don't have clip less pedals so all i needed to do was remove my helmet and take a sip of water and I was on my way What would you do differently?: not much, maybe have my mp3 player handy but not sure I could have made it any quicker Run
Comments: Run was fine, I took it out slow and pushed the last mile. What would you do differently?: I couldn't feel my feet for about 2 miles of this run, from how cold it was. Nothing I could really do differently to prevent this but it sure wasn't much fun Post race
Warm down: not much, walked around did some simple stretches has some bananas and fluids. What limited your ability to perform faster: The swim was absolutely horrible for me, I can't say yet but pretty sure i finished about 490/492. On this flat of course if I would have had a true road bike I could have averaged around 20-21 mph. Event comments: This race was perfect for me as the swim portion was so easy. I didn't see many water spots or bathrooms on the course if any, but then with the coldness hydration wasn't a big issue. I will do it again as it's a great location with my in-laws living in Green Bay. Last updated: 2009-02-12 12:00 AM

My first triathlon, slept probably like any first timers, woke up every hour thinking I missed the event. I finally got out of bed at 5AM, had a small bowl of cheerios, a banana, and a cup of coffee. I rechecked my bag for the umpteenth time loaded the bike and off we went. My wife was kind enough to come along for the first time, to help divert some of my anxieties. Got there got marked up and racked my bike and tried to setup my transition area. I need to add the weather was chilly it was not fun standing around for this to start.
I did a 5 minute run and that was about the extent. Since i was a late register I was in the last wave, which started about 7:25. I walked into the water up to my knees and that was the extent of my warmup.
