Pre-race routine:

Up at 4, coffee and bagels, shower, dress, out the houuse by 5:40, at the race site by 7am.

Picked up bibs, set up transitions, tried to stay warm.Biggest decision was what to wear, decided on tights over tri shorts, then a coolmax undershirt under a coolmax longsleeve with a sports fleece on top. Gloves and earband, left socks on since run out of transition to bike mount wasn't 20 yards.
Event warmup:

Jogged about half a mile to other bathroom and back again. Too cold to warmup on the bike.
Run
  • 14m 11s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

Probably started out a little too fast, settled in to a pace that hurt not too bad. Pretty uneventful. Started to sweat toward the end so i decided to lose the fleece after the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Almost perfectly paced.
Transition 1
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

Ran with bike in socks, mounted pretty easy. no problem getting into shoes.

Time estimated.
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Bike
  • 32m 32s
  • 10 miles
  • 18.44 mile/hr
Comments:

Strong headwind going out, hard to hold 16-17mph. After turnaround, 21-23 mph.
What would you do differently?:

Need to spend more time on the bike, which shouldn't be a problem once DST starts next weekend. Really should be able to push harder than this.
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

Time estimated. Short run to rack, helmet off, fleece off, lost the gloves and earband, shoes on and I'm gone.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 14m 16s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Again too hard when starting out, but settled down in what I thought was slower pace than the first run, but just as hard an effort. Passed about six people who had passed me on the bike during the first mile, during the second mile I had a couple of other folks pass me. One looked like he was in my age group, but there wasn't anything else I could do, no more speed to be found. Turned out he was a younger guy who aged badly. ;^)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Caught breath and waited for Dylan to finish. Then we ate and loaded the bikes while waiting for Angel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of time on the bike, probably not much more than 500 miles since DST went away last fall. Happy about the runs with nearly identical times in both segments, disappointed in the bike but it will get better.

Event comments:

Good start-of-season race, seventh year for this one and they have it down pat. Good bare bones event, plenty of on-course support with good food after.
