Swim
Comments: Very Shallow! Watching the previous waves WALK/WADE/JOG out to the near 200yrd point really put a damper on the swim. Several in the wave never swam the course, merely walked it. Got out to waist deep before swimming, which was still problematic. Just to clarify, I'm 5'6" and I could touch the entire time. Swimming still proved faster as I came out of the water ahead of most. And passed several in the wave infront. Felt kind of cheated. My strongest sport was the swim and I felt that was taken away from me. What would you do differently?: More shallow water practice. Transition 1
Comments: Into transition, helmet/sunglass/shoes. Grabbed and ran. Cleared "mount" line and got both clipped in rather quickly. What would you do differently?: Work on having shoes clipped to the pedals and entering barefoot. Bike
Comments: First hill out of transition dropped many riders due to wrong gear and steepness. Powered up it and got in the groove of riding. Heard many commenting about big hill at mile 3, but never saw it. Big ring-ed most of the race and kept trucking. Made lots of passes through the first 6mi passing others and finding paces. First wave starters were on their way back at my mile 5. Did more passing than being passed. Faster pace than what I thought I had. Also, shot a Gu at mile 7. What would you do differently?: Move my race number on the top tube. It kept sliding and interfering with my water bottle. Attach the Gu's to the handlebars instead of the jersey pocket Transition 2
Comments: Smooth transition, until I kicked my helmet across the area. Had it hung back on the bike, changed shoes, and somehow knocked it off and kicked it. Had to burn a few seconds chasing it down. Grabbed race belt and visor and took out. What would you do differently?: Put helmet on the ground instead of back on the aero bars Run
Comments: I knew the run would be the weakest part due to the past injuries, and it showed! I Got burned on the run! Powered up the same hill the bike started, heart rate spiked and fought it the whole way. Legs were there, just the HR wasn't. Walked the water stops to help cool down and lower the HR. Grabbed some form of gatorade/powerade mix at one of the stops by accident and spewed it after I started running again. Not sure what it was (didn't hear them say anything) and it didn't agree. What would you do differently?: More speedwork and more running Post race
Warm down: Walked around, grabbed water, pizza and a banana. Headed for the stretching tables. What limited your ability to perform faster: The run. Plain and Simple. Event comments: Minor nitpicks on some of the race activities, but the actual race was flawless! Nothing to complain about. Excellent for a first race too! Last updated: 2009-02-17 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:20 (usual time) and began loosening up. Ate banana, piece of toast, small milk, and bottle of water. Made necessary bathroom stops before leaving.
Most everything was pre packed into the truck the night before.
Arrived at transition by 5:45 to set up. When inflating and checking my tires, I noticed the presta valve on the rear tire was broken which really concerned me. I chanced it and rode with it as it was. The pressure was holding 110 so I did not change out my tube that early.
Setup: towel, bike shoes, running shoes, visor, racebelt
Took a Gu at 6:45 and did some walking in the water to warm up. Swam out to the first bouy and back and noticed how shallow it really was
